Wasn't there a thread recently about this? XD As I said there, existing gives you cancer...

Nowt came up when I searched the forum

In the same way that having sex causes cervical cancer.

Smoking is in a league of its own when it comes to causing cancer

lol I can never think of anything to put when writing titles for things.

Nothing wrong with doom mongering

I concur!

additives in food can give you cancer.

Everything gives you cancer nowadays - harumph

It isnt oral sex that gives you cancer its a virus, the same virus that causes cervical cancer in women can cause throat cancer in men.....the risks are very small...and as others have said....just living in this world can cause cancer.

As a smoking drinking ex m cycle racer a newspaper article isnt going to affect Mrs Gs jollies lol

Radio 4 said that open mouth kissing can transfer the same viruses. Makes you wonder how much of this garbage you can believe - the nanny state again, telling us how to live our lives. We are starting to distrust the medical profession!

They'd have us all wrapped up in bubbles soon, not able to touch anything.Everytime I read the news there's new cancer risks, new risks for everything.

Is Oral Sex Safe? was a great documentary on BBC three recently - I expect it will be repeated very shortly!

This is a great sex ed resource - and they've updated with an article on HPV today. Hope this is useful!

I think this and that giving you cancer is more to do with poor journalism and poor communication of the facts through the media, rather than a failing on the medical community's part.

No, it aired some time ago. With the recent Michael Douglas story though I expect they will air it again soon (they'd be daft not to!).

The thing to remember is that there are many types of HPV (currently around 100-120 we know of), all with varying degrees of risk. Infections, dependant on type, can present with signs/symptoms or none at all, so you wouldn't know it was there. The vast majority so far, seem to be low-risk — the sort that trigger growths such as warts and verrucas. That said, you can harbour many types of HPV simultaneously.

Only a fraction of HPV variants are high risk for cancers, most being re genital in men and women. These are all types you wouldn't know were present until infection had been detected during STI screening or more unfortunately, the disease had developed. The type that can precipitate oral cancer is also one of those which can cause genital cancers. Therefore orogenital sex can lead to oral cancer, though it is rare. If cancer develops as a result of infection with a low-risk variety, it's probably due to immunodeficency caused by an underlying disease.

In Michael Douglas' case it was more likely to have been his heavy drinking, smoking and drug use, rather than oral sex. That is, unless HPV has been clearly identified as the cause — the other factors certainly would not have helped matters.

Swingingcouple: The medical profession is not telling you how to lead yours or anybody elses lives. Advice given is for your benefit, but nobody is forcing you to adhere to it if you don't want to. It's your choice to make.

As Alice has pointed out, the biggest problem lies with poor/lazy/misleading jourmalism; journalists reporting on matters of which they have no or insufficient appreciation. This sort of thing has been the bane of scientific/medical research/practice for a long time.

And now pregant women cannot use non skin pans because it might/maybe do something, another case of lazy journalism.

I find all these things annoying, after all still more chance of being hit by the bus!

sorry if this seems a bit of a off the cuff comment , but if you avoid everything in life that may (MAY) harm you , your not realy going to have much of a life, ok it maybe be long but , thing change all the time do this, do that ,dont do this and dont do that
