Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery- whats your thoughts?

Hey guys,

I'm just wondering everyones thoughts on female cosmetic genital surgery? There are so many operations out there- tightening, labiaplasty (reducing or reshaping), hymenoplasty (becoming a 'virgin' again), and even liposuction of the public mound..... the only thing that is even remotely pro-woman is a procedure called g-shock surgery where they inject fillers into your g-spot to make sex more pleasurable.

So...am I alone in thinking this is shocking? I can sympathise with most cosmetic surgery (being the proud owner of two very good examples) but why is this so popular? (risen by 300% in UK in past five years?). Where is the pressure for men? I was reading a forum on the channel 4 website about the prog 'the perfect vagina' and the number of 13/14 year old girls saying they wanted surgery asap (or shockingly- were on the nhs waiting list!!!) was really upsetting.

Rant over! Feel free to disagree and tell me Im being a hypocrite......

I understand why some women want surgery down there, if their lips hang really low etc. Of all the parts of yourself to really hate, that surely must be one of the worst and could have devastating effects, not only on a person's confidence but also their love life. If a person is truly unhappy then I think like all forms of plastic surgery, you have to weigh the risks against the possible outcome. Young girls or people without any actual problems tho - that is worrying! x

I have a bit of a problem with plastic surgery in general as I would prefer surgeons were using the medical skills to save lives. Having said that, reconstructive surgery after acycidents and on burns victims etc probably does wonders for the physical and emotional health of people which is fantastic. I have a bit of an issue with the concept of cosmetic surgery in that it perpetuates the concept of an ideal rather than celebrating the natural variety and beauty of the individual.

In terms of genitals: personally I feel very lucky, happy and horny if I'm allowed to look at a pussy at all, I don't find one particularly more attractive than another...if it's there and willing as far as I'm concerned it's perfect!

i hink if there is a medical reason for the surgery - like if the woman keeps getting UTI's, or has issues with hygene, or even if she has a problem with having sex or dosen't feel comfortable then it is fine.

i don't think that surgery for the sake of it is ever good, but there are somepeople with genuine reasons for having it.

About the hymenoplasty...

http://www.thefrisky.com/post/246-russian-woman-restored-her-virginity-six-times/

Hymenoplasty could possibly save a woman's life in a country that kills women if they're not virgins on the wedding night. Labiaplasty sounds really drastic though. I mean, unless it is seriously affecting your love life in some way, or causing medical problems, it just sounds painful and unnecessary.

Thanks to the media's portrayal of women and men, not many feel comfortable in their own skin. But to think that even our genitals have come under scrutiny is rather ridiculous.

I'm rather against it, as I'm against 95% of cosmetic surgery.

I find it difficult to understand the mindset where someone would have surgery (and risky surgery at that - all surgery carries risk) because they just dont like the way they look.

I hate my belly. It protrudes far too much and I dont like it. Still, if someone offered to pay for whatever surgery needed to get rid of it, I dont think I would. I'd rather keep it the way it is, it's me. Having surgery just feels like cheating to me, and every time I looked at my flat stomach after that I'd feel guilty that it wasnt me. I think women should embrace what they've got and not worry about what they haven't.

I can agree with cosmetic surgery for some of the reasons mentioned above, such as hymenoplasty where there's a high religious importance on virginity and repairing damage done by people involved in accidents and stuff, but the people who have it just because they want to look good? I feel like rolling my eyes and telling them to get a life.

I'd be interested to see if there are any statistics on why women who have genital surgery choose to do so.

I'm completely, totally and utterly against it. I think it's a fabricated surgery that preys on women's insecurities and any doctor who performs it is a disgrace, tbh. Any woman walking into a surgery so unhappy that she wants to surgically alter her genitals should be being directed to a counsellor, not the operating table.

I couldnt have worded it better myself!

Yep, complete agreement,

i can understand if they have something that is, well i dont want to say not normal, maybe disfiguring?

i dont know how best to word this, but i just feel that if it is something a woman feels EXTREMELY SELF CONSCIOUS about, and alot of counselling hasnt altered it at all, then maybe they should go for it,

i don't really understand much about it tbh though, i love my vagina just the way it is, it's a bit chubby on the mound, but the rest of me is very chubby so its to be expected, if i was to alter the mound i'd have to alter every single bit of me.

i am what i am :]

I must say I find the image of a nice fully and squidgy mound highly erotic!

XD

you should have that as a slogan against women getting liposuction down there haha, i bet it would make them feel that tiny bit sexier :]

I completely agree with nexas x

I agree about needing counselling- in my research of the subject I've found women that run vaginal healing clases where groups of women basically sit around with mirrors trying to get over the shame and embarrassment they feel.

These posts are so different from the ones on the forum for the ch4 programme The Perfect Vagina- I was really saddened to read all the young, young girls who thought they looked 'ugly'. If someone is that intimate with you they shouldn't care and if you are just hooking up with them randomly then you shouldn't care!

The labiaplasty is sometimes done under local anaesthtic...you are awake.....aowch x

I don't see why it's any worse than any other surgery. But I'm generally against cosmetic surgery unless there are valid circumstances.

Because it's 100% unnecessary. If someone has a huge nose and is getting teased about it to the extent that their self-esteem is so battered they want it changed - ok, fine. That's your nose, you walk around with it on your face all day and all night and people are shallow and they're going to make comments.

But your labia? That's nobody's business but your own. We don't walk around with them showing, so we have no real concept of what's considered "normal". One woman who thinks she's practically disfigured down there could look totally and utterly normal, she just doesn't know it.

It really just makes me so angry that there are medical professionals out there willing to basically mutilate women who clearly have massive self-esteem issues to make a quick buck. It sickens me.

There is actually a length of tendon/muscle that connects the penis to your abdomen area, you can have it cut quite easily that releases your penis. So your penis will hang a bit lower, but it'll add up to an inch in its size, but I don't know if that's erect or flaccid.

Anyway, as you were...

Nexas wrote:

It's the same as penile surgery though isn't it? Penile surgery doesn't even increase the length of erections...just the flacid state. But it's about people's OWN securities.

I personally dislike cosmetic surgery, but if someone has self-esteem issues that are subsequently lessened by such procedures, then I can't see it being a bad thing.

I don't agree with penile surgery either. And as you're saying, IF the self-esteem issues are lessened - I don't believe they are. Anyone with such deep-seated self-esteem issues isn't going to be helped by an operation, because the problem's not on their body, it's in their head.

I dunno, I've known women to have had breast enlargement and breast reduction surgery and they feel fantastic afterwards. But I think that's down to the individual.

Dave: That's flaccid ^_^ Which to me, seems pointless!

Breasts are different, you get positive feedback from other people when you have big breasts, people's reactions to you change, you get looked at in a positive way. Women who think their breasts are too small think so because of hundreds of years of social conditioning and enforcement of stereotypes - women who hate their labia, why does that happen? It's an internal thing, not coming from outer stimuli, except perhaps the proliferation of porn. And now that we know better, now that we know people are affected by imagery like this, we need to stop cutting people open just so that they look like people on a screen or in a magazine. It's barbaric.

I have no problem with someone choosing to do it, or wanting to do it. They have a genuine problem that needs to be addressed. My problem lies with the qualified doctor who will take a person like that and instead of helping them, pointing them in the right direction (lots and lots of counselling), takes their money and slices them open instead. It's commercialism at its worst.

Ah, yeah if it's just flaccid why bother. But sure each to their own. Also you got a pun in there and maybe didn't notice, good job :D

shellyboo something bothers me about your posts. in some you say you have no issue with women getting surgery like this, and in another you say it is dispicable, cruel and barbaric, claming that counceling will cure all. would you say to someone who had something like clubbed feet that it was just how theyre made and instead of having surgery to correct their medical conditions they should go for counselling and it will cure all? its the same theory as you apply to this surgery.

labiaplastys are done cosmetically, for cosmetic reasons. but the majority of surgeries are done because women feel unconfortable in everyday situations, for exapmple cloathes rubbing, an increase in UTI's or it affecting their sex lives so badly that they are non existent. counselling can't sort out cloathes rubbing or UTI's!

yes, people who have it done for cosmetic reasons should probably be offored counselling first. but those who get this proceure done on the NHS in england have to have severe cases and have to go through counselling beforehand. the operation is available in the private medical profession, but theyre still the same doctors, same hypocratic oath and regulations to have operations.

I agree whole heartedly with SL here. Some situations are kinda nessecary, but just for image sakes I dont agree with it at all!

but if the "image sakes" means someone cannot have any sex life at all? because theyre that upset. uncomfortable about it? it does happen to people

if a woman said she could not have sex or be intimate with a partner most people wouldn't condemn her for wanting breast augmentation, so why this?
