Think the article is a little deceptive. We only use a ring behind the balls, the photo shows a tape measure, I would suggest using a piece of string to wrap round fairly tightly around when you are erect and then measure the length so you can get the circumference for the ring.
If in doubt get a cheap ring just to see if the diameter/circumference is right for you or too slack or painful (tight).
Don't worry about having to cut it off if it is too small, just stop, you will go soft, get the ring off and buy the next size up.
