As for I, it took about 4 months and a lot of swapping around; I.E. going from: fingers - toy, repeat while slowly dropping the fingers to a warmup act.
And the same could be said about lube…
used a small amount to mimic spit and how it dries out, to slowly increasing the volume until I got used to it.
Methinks it’s a nice idea to put it out there for any other newbies that may be disheartened on being unable to reach an O with a toy.
Just know, it takes a bit to get used to, and you may have to condition yourself the way I did.
Also, finding the right size will go a long, long way into helping with that.
Too big, you’ll be in your head and unable to enjoy it; Too small, well, you’ll know… and at least you get a warmup toy.

I was very late in getting my first toy (10 months ago) and it was too big. I think my eyes were bigger than my watsit. Got myself a mini rabbit and I was away. Have moved on a bit since then as I now have a good selection to keep me happy.
Not sure I ever did have a warm up phase… I got my first toy and that was it, haven’t looked back since and before that I was just using random objects!
