Our cat used to do something similar to this - just stare at a particular spot on the wall/ceiling, you'd look and not see anything and when you look back at the cat, he's looking at you with a look on his face which says "Ha, fooled you". You could just imagine he'd love to roll around laughing at having tricked you!
