Sometimes they don't have the sizes you normally go for so it's good to know about sister sizes :)
If the band feels too tight very often it is because the cup is too small and that is the mistake a lot of women make.
What happens is the surplus breast tissue takes up the band space.
When trying on a bra you have to use the scoop method.
That means bending forwards from the waist and scooping all of the breast tissue into the cup including from around your back and under your arms. (Google gives a better explanation of this).
Always buy a bra which fastens on the loosest fastening because with wear and washing it stretched out so you will need to use the tighter fastenings eventually.
The band should be sitting level all of the way around and parallel to the ground.
Sister sizes can sometimes fit better with certain styles for example if you are a 30d take in a 32c and a 28dd to try. Some brands and styles come up bigger and some come up smaller. I always try a T shirt over a bra when I'm fitting as I find this distracts away from looking at the rest of your body.
Another common mistake when looking at your back and if it is looking very lumpy bumpy people think the band is too tight but that isn't true very often it is too loose and the cups are too small. What is happening here is your breasts are pushing the back of the bra up which creates lumps.
Another common mistake women tightening the straps too tight because they are not getting the lift. The majority of the support should come from the band not the straps. You should be able to fit two fingers under the shoulder straps comfortably and this will prevent divots forming on your shoulders.
You should only be able to fit two fingers in the back of the band if you can pull it out further then it is too loose.

Also m&s and Victoria's Secret are 2 of the worst places to have a fitting. I recommend bravissimo and they don't even use a tape measure, they go by how it looks and fits.
i went to m&s for a fitting and the bras now just dont fit properly. dont think there are any bravissimo shops near me? was thinkng about boox avenue but the fact they dont go upto size 38 makes me not want to shop there out of principle!
That's ridiculous not doing a 38 I would feel the same.
There is Debenhams as well but I've never had a fitting there but it might be worth a try.
I know rigby & pellet are excellent too but very pricey 😳

So i tried on a 36E bra on in a shop yesterday just to experiment and it fitted really well. I am pleasently surprised to see how little there is in it between the two sizes (D and E).
Yes sometimes there isn't a lot between sizes although it is supposed to be an inch.
I'm so glad you managed to find something you like that fits correctly as it can be such a mission.
Captain meow - bravissimo can be pricey but you could always get measured and then go elsewhere. 😊
Perhaps even off of here, I wish they did bigger sizes on here with smaller backs. 😔

So i tried on a 36E bra and it fitted good
i have been watching youtube videos and tried the method:
subratcting the bust measurement from around the underbust. so
36 (band size) minus the bust measurement (42') which is 6 (does anyone else go by this method?)
and on the tables it says i am a 36F
how can/has it changed from 2 cup sizes?

Yes definitely a 36f should be your starting point. Then try a sister size of band below so either 34ff or 34g (said this because some stores completely miss a ff cup. Also try a 38e. As you know some brands/styles are smaller or bigger so always use your measurements as a starting point.
Also women's bust size change throughout the month so for example at the beginning of the month my boobs are smaller but right before my monthlies they are much bigger. A lot of women are unaware but our breasts need to be measured every 6 months because they really do change all of the time, this can be linked to weight gain/weightloss, hormones, age, genetics and change in body shape and exercise (muscle growth/muscle loss).
