As much as I don't want to get the reputation for being argumentative, the hand wash comparison is kinda relevant. I mean, of course you don't bring bare skin in contact while "cleaning up", but there is still a transfer of bacteria - if there wasn't, we wouldn't be told to wash our hands! Add to that the fact that whether at home, in the office, the pub or wherever, when you pull the chain on the flush, a lot of other people have done that too, thus transferring bacteria from other sources onto your hands.
Now, you may not suck on your fingers, but every time you touch something you transfer those bacteria to that surface, whether it's a pint glass or your face or hair and I think it's pretty safe to assume that at some stage in those proceedings, some of that bacteria will end up in your mouth.
I once saw a programme on tv that did a test on toothbrushes for fecal matter and they found that even if the loo was in another room from the toothbrush, there was still fecal matter present on the bristles. Gross, eh?
And I'd be willing to bet that you put one of those in your mouth every day!
