The Gym

I would get bored going to the gym, so i treat work as paid exercise and push myself when lifting.
On the other side of the coin i am mystified by idle work colleagues who do as little as possible, but pay to go to the gym next door to work!

Afternoon all, i recently restarted exercise but not my usual resistance bands only,i have mixed things up by incorporating bands, kettlebell’s and bars into a kind of strength/warrior type of training in my own back yard.
I’ve used gym’s over the years but got fed up of
A - the shite music blaring away
B - the meatheads looking down on you if you’re not curling 200kg or pressing the weight of a car!!! ( a slight exaggeration i know but you get my drift)
C - the weight clangers (this one particularly grinds my gears)
D - the gym princess who wants everyone to look at her in her expensive matching designer outfit whilst pouting in front of the mirror
So as and when I get set up int back garden and have a play (with whatever music i fancy listening to:blush::blush::blush:)

I work next to a gym and often see the posers of both sexes on the car park! Typical “Love Island” types!

Wish I could be a gym poser. I’m more ‘red faced, exhausted, about to die.’

The wife works out way more than me anymore, she’s usually in her gym 3-4 times during the week. Me anymore I do try to hit my gym close to work at least a couple times a week. We walk together on the weekends most Saturday/Sundays which is about a 5k loop. I used to be extremely involved in triathlons, so I spent about 10 years in almost constant training. At 55 now, I try to just stay attractive to my wife. :joy:

Years ago I also had a technical Job with some physical effort required. When one of my colleagues handed in his notice he said how he had lost weight and his waist size had reduced by several holes on his belt. Our regional manager said he should be paying the company to come to work as he would have had to pay a lot to get those results at a gym.

Anyone know of any ways to meet someone of a similar fitness to me as a ‘workout buddy’? I could really do with a friend to exercise with! None of my friends are interested. Or maybe I don’t really have many friends :grimacing::joy:

In person/online? Are you wanting someone here to be a buddy? What’s your fitness routine like? I’m sure there’s someone here to help motivate you to that effect.

@Kitty-Cat01 If your Gym has classes join one of them. I’m sure there will be people of all levels wanting to do the same thing as yourself.

Ask the “PTs” at the gymdesk and get them to watch you and then see if there is someone on a similar level to work beside, etc

My gym offers this, they buddy you up with people during programmes to help push each other.

Or as Mel said, do some classes & meet folk there

I guess I was thinking that there should be an app or something that you can put in the gym you use, what you’re into, fitness level and availability and connect with people at the same gym who might also be looking for someone to work out with. I think asking one of the PTs might be a good idea.

I’m really not a social person, I find classes overwhelming especially with the loud music, bright lights and too many people, on top of the awkwardness of ‘performing’ in front of other people. I did a weights class a few years ago (I went for a few months) but never said a word to anyone the whole time!

My fitness level is low, I have disabilities and medical conditions that cause pain and fatigue so having someone to keep me company takes some of my mind off the pain and discomfort of trying to exercise! I’m very determined and don’t really need the motivation of a PT, just the understanding and support of a friend.

I should edit that last paragraph - my fitness level is rubbish for me (I’m sure it’s not the worst it could be) because I used to be a size 6 - 8, into badminton, climbing and mountain walking, now I can manage a walk on flat ground with plenty of rest stops and I find 2 flights of stairs tough. I use a HIIT structure to my gym workouts but a low impact version where I basically push myself for short bursts. I also enjoy doing weights because they make me feel stronger and I can actually do them without feeling too unwell!
