There is more to a stiffy than meets the eye.

I thought I'd post this - a quick synopsis of my readings on the mechanics of an erection. My interest in this topic stems, I guess, from my occasional issues with ED (lets face it, most of us don't worry about how our car works till it stops doing so). I read the traditional explanation of how the erection mechanism works - that chemical messaging is involved in causing a dilation of arteries feeding into the penis and that there is a reduction of the outflow by constriction of the veins. At the time I had my doubts that this was the complete story. My experience of the tug-of-war one gets when wearing a chastity device - the would-be erection pushing outwards and the trapped testicles trying to hold it all back seemed to involve a lot more force than one would expect from 120mmHg blood-pressure and a 50mm bore tube - calculating Pi* Sqr(R)*h*Ro*g in your head at the dead of night is one way to suppress a caged nocturnal stiffy. And that impression turns out to be right - research has shown that the pressure inside a human penis can be about 4 times the systolic blood pressure (in animals it can run to several atmospheres pressure!)

The next bit of information that dropped into my musings was that research has shown pelvic floor exercises for men can improve erectile performance by the same amount as Viagra - a message that I think anyone interested in the well-being of a penis, be it as owner or recipient, should be aware of. Further investigation revealed that there is an interesting reflex involving two muscles, the ischiocavernosus muscle and the bulbocavernosus muscle, and sudden pressure changes in the penis. Basically if you squeeze the penis the pressure change triggers these two muscles into action with slightly different delays and durations. It all sounds like a pumping action at work and indeed this mechanism does seem to pump the pressure in the penis up to the elevated figures that have been found.

Next time you have a penis handy give it a try - give it a quick squeeze and note the involuntary twitch that results. So remember ladies, when it comes to a penis, it may like a stroke but it will find a squeeze, quite literally, irresistible 8-)=

BTW - there would appear to be a similar reflex in women (yes, the same two muscles exist in both sexes) and that the blood-flow to the clitoris is enhanced by their twitching. So it seems that during sex we are actually pumping each other up!

Fab thread title, and brilliant research/observations. Everyone should be doing pelvic floor exercises!

I agree. I notice that overwhelmingly women who have tried TENS/EMS type pelvic floor exercisers reckon they work (judging by Amazon product reviews) so I have been experimenting with electrode arrangements that might work for men. As I have mentioned previously, I had a bad start in the electro-sex business years ago by designing a unit that just happened to deliver an eye-watering shock if you turned it off while still attached so I have been more cautious this time! Anyway, I have found that the combination of an anal electrode with a large area electrode around the shaft of the penis seems to cause muscle contractions in the right places without causing the eyes to go crossed.

Its too early to say if it's working but at least I haven't fused anything.

Yep, I can vouch for this, my hubby started doing these exercises daily and his is harder and thicker (and a little longer) than it used to be. No more ED either (which he had a few times and hence prompted me to look into more natural ways of helping.

When hubby started doing his I thought I'd give them a go too and it really does tighten you up but the best result I've found with doing them is that my painful periods have become noticably less painful. Just for that reason alone it's worth it for me.

Good stuff

I thought I really should report back as regards the effect of the electrically assisted pelvic floor exercises as it has to be the most amazing improvement in our sex life for some time.

Before I started doing this I was beginning to have issues with reliably getting and maintaining a good erection. If I had had a drink in the evening or was slightly tired or stressed it could be an issue. However, after about 6 weeks of doing on average about an hour a day with the EMS I now have rock-hard, reliable stiffies at the slightest provocation - like I'm 20 again! The great thing about using EMS for the exercises is that you can pack a lot of hours in with next to zero effort. To start with I was using the EMS for several hours a day but as a result the improvements became rapidly evident. My wife has also been using an EMS for pelvic floor exercise and despite being somewhat less driven than I am as regards getting the hours in there is no doubt we can both feel the improvement in her tightness.

So *that's* why the OH is consistently responsive to a brief squeeze. I was playing with that response just last night - in fact I commented that I love how it always "throbs" in response to a well placed squeeze.

Great post!

Glad you have been having fun!

Thanks to my wife's extensive research - sometimes it's hell being a Guinea-pig 8-)= we have come to the conclusion that the site of the pressure sensitivity is right at the tip - even a modest tap on the end can trigger the twitch. Thanks to all the exercises I have been doing mine now has a kick like a kango-hammer.

Now this whole thing gives me an idea for a pelvic floor exerciser for men. Imagine a small sphygmomanometer cuff that wraps around the cock and is inflated about 30 times a minute by a small air-pump. It could exercise just the right muscles and you could easily get 3000 reps in while watching an F1 race (i.e. asleep).

Ha! Sounds perfect, you're on to a winner there.

Pelvic floor exercises I can't recommend enough (like you say) - the control my fella has over when he comes, how he comes, whether he ejaculates etc. etc.

Definitely useful,
