Definitely not needing to use condoms makes your lube life easier. Then you only need to watch what you're getting on your toys, if they are silicone-based.
I think for the most part, sticking with water-based if your best bet, unless you like a thicker lube for anal. I tend to keep a tingly water-based lube on hand when I want a little something extra, and a thick cream when I want anal. But then I've always been partial to creams for anal play--not everyone agrees. :)
