2 quick questions about the forum

@teacake found a way to do this. I can’t edit the automated “Deleted by author” notice but what I can do is undelete the original post and then edit it with a reason and repost. That works for me. I won’t go back to all my messed up posts but going forward it will be helpful (to me). Nothing to do with the Secret Service, just trying to be best understood in a totally text based environment where things can easily be misunderstood.

Not talking about edited posts, I am referring to deleted ones.

The majority of people are understood really well.

Type in your response or question opening a thread…edit or delete it as it’s your response and up to you as to why you do that.

Other members read it and add a comment if they wish.

All your points are valid but you are missing my original question but that doesn’t matter given I have it figured out now.

They may change their minds about a reply or think it’s no longer relevant, and yes you were talking about editing…

“If I see a post from another that has been edited 6 times it does make me question legitimacy when it it may be just formatting issues”

That is out of context from my original question. The quote is correct but referring to a different issue.

O great that’s me sometimes, sometimes my phone has its only mind :joy::iphone:

People delete posts for various reasons, sometimes years later, i really can’t see why it bothers you so much.

It seems many are completely misconstruing what I am inquiring about. I am not suggesting everyone justify their deleted posts. I was looking for a way to explain mine. As @teacake alluded to… sometimes trying to post from a phone doesn’t go well and makes a mess of a reply. No biggie. I have figured out how to do it.

I think you’ll find that no-one really wants an explanation as to why you’ve deleted a post.

:thinking::thinking::thinking:

Not my concern. I am looking to keep my content tidy. As I have mentioned, I don’t expect others to do it but I would like to and especially if I have deleted 6 in a row.

I get what you’re saying, lots of my posts have edited symbols because I’ve seen a spelling or grammar mistake later on. A few people add a little note at the bottom, stating, Edited for spelling mistake or something similar. It is irritating that they show it’s edited for tiny changes though as people might think you’ve changed the whole gist of the post.

I tend to always edit rather than delete.

I would say if you just delete the post and leave it as default deleted the entire thing vanishes in 24 hours (I think it’s 24 hours) so there’s no long term record of deleted posts and the content is tidied up again.

Edited to remove an excess “though”

LOL… very funny.

Sadly genuine :woman_shrugging:t2:, my sentence read, “It is irritating that they show it’s edited for tiny changes though as people might think you’ve changed the whole gist of the post though.”

The irony of needing to edit the post given the topic of conversation did amuse me however.

My original comment was about “Deleted by author” but I mentioned edits in the discussion. I often have to correct spelling when posting from my phone. I don’t have issue with an edited post but do wonder if a post has been edited multiple times.

I think I will start doing what you did with your edited post and add a tagline. Many news websites do similar.

Edited to add second thought

Now I understand where you’re coming from, with the additional context you’ve given. You value transparency regarding the edits and what they were for.

Your initial post seemed more generalised about deleted posts, rather than minimising edits. Totally understandable now you’ve given context.

I do know there’s a small grace period regarding edits when you first post, in that if you edit it quick enough for errors it won’t display any edits in the top corner. But I don’t think it’s too long, maybe a minute or two?

I personally use the preview in the bottom corner of the text box (on mobile), but still occasionally make mistakes here and there because of how my hands get with my chronic illness. And sometimes I’ll think of an additinal point to add, so I often swing back to posts I’ve made.
