Advice on video cameras please

My O. H loves to film it when we have a particularly naughty session, ( and I have a few planned 😉 ). At the moment he records it on his phone, but then has to delete it afterwards in case it gets into the wrong hands. It's just occurred to me to get him a small, simple video camera for Christmas.... nothing expensive as it's a last minute thing and I've already got his main present, but something where film doesn't have to be transferred off of it ( don't want it on the family p.c or lap top ) something he can just watch by playing back on its own screen, and it would be good if it has a hands free option too.It would need to be point and use as he's not very techy Happy to even get one from eBay. I have no experience of video cameras though. Any suggestions? Thanks

Sorry I've managed to make this post twice as it showed as unsent, but if you can advise, can you answer on this one please? (Hopefully admin can remove the other one? )

I would recommend that you take advice from a camera shop such as Jessops but obviously don't tell them the actual use but just what you want the camera to do. We will be doing the same as our son needs a camera for his Media studies at school .

Just don't be tempted to borrow it for an evening ; )

No chance of that anyway . My Mrs hates having her picture taken normally let alone without clothes lol

Buy one that takes the mini CD disks if you can still get them you record straight onto the disk can record over them take them out and hide them nothing incriminating on a laptop you can connect straight to the TV or buy a portable CD player to watch them on

I'm sure cameras and disks are available on ebay

Have you thought about getting some writable DVD's and transferring the movies over from his phone. Many computers have writable DVD drives but if not they can be had for little money. Or even simpler would be a portable flash drive or even a portable hard drive if you have a lot of movies. Flash drives are very easy to hide and even if they are found, no one would know what's on it unless they actually plug it in. And that can be avoided by getting one that requires a password.

Just thought I'd throw the idea out there in case you hadn't thought of it.

Sorry should of said DVD not cd

many camcorders run on memory cards, so as long as you keep them in safe hands you can view the videos on a laptop to get the benefot of a decent sized screen, without having to transfer it onto the laptop/pc.

Or you could consider a tablet with front facing camera. The quality wont be as good as a specific camcorder but means that again you have a larger screen for playback.

I once set up my phone to record at the side of the bed, my laptop recording at the foot of the bed and ex's phone on the other side of the bed.

Then got all three onto the laptop and was able to cut the best bits from each camera, swapping angles to make a decent video (had a ot of time to kill a few years ago!)

Was great fun makin the films, cutting and editing and of course the playback

Also bear in mind, camcorders dont often come with built in lights unless youre spending decent money. So best to get advice on how it performs in low light conditions, assuming you dont have a full studio set lighting set up!

I would worry you'll run into exactly the same problems with a camera as you would with a phone with regards to it falling into the wrong hands. Especially if you're just keeping the files on the camera memory since there's no way to stop people from being able to access that if they pick up the camera.

Do either of you have a smartphone? You can get some very useful apps that keep private things private. Search 'vault', for example, and you'll find dozens of apps which lock your photographs away in a folder that you cannot access without having the password to unlock it. Some of them have a wipe feature as well, like if someone tries to guess the password too many times it will wipe the contents of the vault instead. These apps are useful if your partner is the type of person who doesn't like to password protect the entire phone but would rather only have to enter a password to access one folder.

Failing that, can his phone take a memory card? Usually this would be a micro SD card and so extremely simple to hide somewhere, he could copy the files off the phone and onto the card then leave the card hidden. Whatever camera you'd buy would likely have a memory card so this method could be used with it as well, though then the question becomes is it really worth buying a cheap camera that will only film to the same quality as your phones when you could just hide the phone memory card anyway?

I fear the 'nothing expensive' is the downfall as really, there's no such thing as 'nothing expensive' in the camera world! I honestly think it would be more cost effective to try to find a way to discreetly store the phone files, especially as you'd need to find a way to discreetly hide the camera and its contents anyway.
