advice on which toy to choose

Hi!

I'm new to this site and to sex toys in general so I wanted to ask for advice. Lately I've been thinking a lot about purchasing a toy or two but there are so many options, it's a bit overwhelming, especially as I've never tried anything of the sort before. I was thinking more along the lines of an external one, and my needs would be the following:

1. Something cheap - as it is a first purchase, and I don't know if I'll like it or not, I wpuldn't want to spend lots of money on it

2. Something discreet - I live at home with my mom and my sister (younger, but still over 18) and although we all respect each other's privacy, it's still not something I'd like to have pop out and be absolutely clear what it is

3. Single speed or multi speed? Which do you think is best for a first timer?

Browsing around, I've been particularly looking at these two items http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=9670 and http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=14881 or maybe this http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=14042 But everything seems to have such good reviews, I'm a bit lost.

Thoughts? Ideas? I'm open to suggestions. And thank you in advanvce for your help!

I would suggest either a bullet or a small rabbit for a beginner toy, and you can pick up both/either of these at a fairly reasonable price. Lovehoney has a fantastic returns policy so it may be worth investing a little bit more than you anticipate: you can always return it if you don't like it, and you do tend to get what you pay for with sex toys.
Bullets tend to be quite discreet and small, although there is all manner of toys disguised as other things, or of a size/shape which doesn't immediatley indicate a vibrator. Rabbits are probably the most obvious of toys so it might actually be worth avoiding those unless you have somewhere safe you can hide it.
I would always say to go for multi speed. You don't know what you like, so having a variety of functions will allow you to experiment. Some people prefer low, soft vibrations, whilst others will struggle to climax unles it's a strong vibe. A few vibes also offer different patterns as well as speeds which are fantastic for experimentation.
Good luck! (:

Great advice, some bullets are cheap very powerful and very discrete. Just depends. On if you like clitoral stimulation or vaginal or both.Enjoy your first purchase and read the reviews with the products to help you choose.

I have both the egg and the Tracey Cox bullet, although I haven't used either in a long while, and I'd recommend either of them to a beginner - if you're one of those people that get easily irritated by wires then the egg probably isn't the best choice as it's pretty long! I'd say the egg is more powerful than the Tracey Cox bullet, and obviously it has more speeds and you can experiment with internal stimulation with it which you can't reaaally do with the bullet, but the bullet's slightly quieter and more discreet.

10 functions (wow!), AND for a great price.

*sneakily adds it to wish list*

Definitely get a bullet as a starter toy! And then sign up for deal of the day emails so you can see lots of other bargins!

I'd recommend a Rocks Off bullet. Discreet, quiet but powerful. It was my very first toy and it's still my favourite!

Hi

I would also recommend the Dream Bullet (gentle giant already linked it) - I think it's a great toy for beginners, it has plenty of functions and is fairly quiet. It's also smooth and feels lovely & the tip is great for precision stimulation.

Avoid the BASICS bullet please. The batteries are awful, I used to own one and if it was my first toy I probably would have never bought more. The batteries are terrible, I only used it once because it broke after that and one of the batteries ended up leaking. In terms of power, it's buzzy and only has the one speed which sucks because I think most people want to experiment to see what works best for them. It's also very loud for something so tiny.

The Tracey Cox bullet is good, but does only have the one speed. I also have this: http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=25367 but the old version before they changed the battery so I'm not sure how this one compares - maybe someone could comment? Anyway, I really like it, the Shimmy and Dream Bullet are the only 'begginer' toys I still use. I love the texture on Shimmy, but some people may be put off by it. The Shimmy also comes in a lovely tin so is perfectly discreet.

I personally think the Dream Bullet would be your best bet here. But - do you even like clitoral stimulation? Because it might be worth getting something a bit larger that you can use on your clitoris as well as internally, especially if you're not sure what gets you off yet. This http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=25883 is slightly larger than your average bullet so you can experiment with it.

EDIT: I just noticed that the Dream Bullet and Lady Lustfinger are in the 25% off when you spend £10 offer so you could get both? Don't forget Lovehoney have an amazing returns policy so there's no worries if you don't like them.

Definitely include a bullet. Also worth bearing in mind that an end total of £10+ means no postage cost. Lube would be a probably worthwhile addition.

@LMMB. Loving the new avatar pic.

while i didn't start out with a bullet you can't beat them for discreetness i've got various single and multispeed ones the most discreet looks just like a lipstick very loud though. my favourite is my Rocks Off bullet http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=29619&reviewid=70866#customer_reviews good power rumbly vibrations multiple settings quiet waterproof and you get a storage pouch to hide it in

That's a 'glowing' review myghost. *fetches coat*

I'd definitely recommend a bullet vibrator. My first toy was the Tracey Cox bullet which kept me very happy for quite a while - even though it's only single speed.

I don't have either of these, but the Lovehoney dream bullet has 3 speeds and 7 patterns and loads of great reviews http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=22122 and the Lovehoney Bionic bullet has 2 speeds and 3 patterns http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=20753.

The Rocks off RO80 is also a great little bullet (I have the single speed) and there are a few options to choose from - The single speed http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=10157. Or a 7 speed function http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=29682 http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=28137 http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=29619

The single or multi-speed option is a) personal preference, and b) dependant on the power of the bullet itself. Some multi-speed bullet's I've tried can only get me off when on the highest speed, whilst some single speed bullet's get me off no problem.

I'd adivse to stay clear of toys that take the tiny watch batteries such as the LR44 batteries, as they only last for about 30 mintues and don't supply a lot of power anyway, and to choose toy's that take N, AA, or AAA batteries as they are more powerful and last so much longer!

I just realised some of my text has disappeared.

RE the single or multi-speeds, I said above that it's personal preference, but obviously as you've never tried a toy before, a multi-speed would probably be best for you as you would then have the option to experiment with different levels and intensities of vibration to see what your body reacts to best.

Hi Starfish - there are some great suggestions here already - but I would like to also suggest this little bullet set:

http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=25367

I just bought this and I must say I am very impressed - it has 3 speeds and has a lovely rumbly vibration to it. Included is also a tin of arousal balm which feels amazing - has a spare battery and comes in a lovely tin which is great for discreet storage :) xx

I'm with PPD - my first vibrator was the lady lustfinger. I've broken two now (oops) and they dont last for years, but it's a pretty good intro and you can move onwards and upwards from there.

I'm also going to recommend starting with a bullet.

The Dream bullet with 10 functions http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=22122

The RocksOff Bullet with 7 functions http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=28137

The Swoon set http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=25367

The Lovehoney Bionic Bullet with 5 functions http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=20753

are all great starting ones.

I would personally say one with several speeds and patterns would be the better choice as I know a friend who recently got one from a well known high street shop that only has one speed and she said it felt like it was rattling her bones. I have since introduced her to Lovehoney and given her advice on where to start with toys.

I would also recommend that when you first use a bullet that you try it over your knickers to get used to the sensation, this way if it is slightly too powerful you'll not get the rattling bones feeling and it won't be too sensitive to start with, lettting you graduate and adjust to it.

As mentioned above a lube would be a good addition to give you a different sensation too, some people prefer lube around their clitoris when using a bullet. A water based lube is generally best to use with toys.

Another option to add a different sensation / increased sensations is an orgasm balm like http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=24568 or http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=18566 or http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=25009

After the bullet if you want to progress to another toy possibly internally I would then suggest the Lovehoney Basics Egg or The Lovehoney Mulitspeed Silencer Whisper Quiet Waterproof Vibrator http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=16603

The vibe is made to be especially quiet for those sharing homes and having a need to be silent. It's also a great size and shape for beginners to get used to internal toys.

This offer http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/special-offers/2850/ has a few of the mentioned items in it and is a good way to get the most value for your money. Also you get free delivery with a £10 spend & 1 years free returns if you find you don't like an item and want to try another instead. The customer service team at Lovehoney are great and will be more than happy to help you find an alternative if this does happen.

Hope this helps :)
