Aircraft?

Did anyone else hear the loud planes flying over yesterday evening? At first I thought it was someone dragging the big wheelie bins down the road, except our road isn’t long enough and no ones going to drag four or more bins behind them for 10mins.

From some one in the know it turned out it was …

C-17 Globemasters (heavy transport)
KC-135 tanker (refuelling)
CV-22 Ospreys
RAF Voyager tankers

Apparently it was routine but I’ve never heard them round here before. We thought maybe there was another oil tanker thing going on or a strike in the Middle East.

Download an app called FlightRadar24 and you can look. If an aircraft doesn’t show (Police and some military don’t), try ADSB exchange. Sad I know but I like watching the Police helicopters searching and following cars

We here in Norfolk the other month had a sonic boom go off from a jet at RAF Marham

It’s a regular occurrence to see and hear C-17 Globemasters and RAF Airbus flying over where we are because we’re reasonably close to an RAF airbase.

The Globemaster and Airbus are quite loud especially when they’re flying low. They generally do a whole load of circuits around the area sometimes for half an hour or more. I suppose they have to get their flying hours in!

FlightRadar24 is pretty good and most aircraft show up on there, although as @Stacy2 said some military and Police don’t.

Yeah its very unusual to hear them round here but they were definately circling. The most we normally get is the beautiful sound of the BBMF flying on their way to a show somewhere. When we first moved here we’d get hot air balloons coming down a little too low. Something about the wind over the hill behind us that would drag them down to roof top level.

We get a lot of the big helicopters fly over really low and the big grey airplanes doing drops over salisbury plain.

Can I out-nerd you ? I’ve got an Icom ID52 :innocent:

Although your radio is renowned as probably the best available, especially for rapid scanning.

My o/h used to live on Raf Wyton and recounts one time when a Tornado blew out the front windows in about six houses on base including hers when she was at home….

Damn!! That must have been a jump scare moment! Surprised it didn’t blow anyone’s eardrums too!

Ok so on further clarification AJ from herself, it was actually Raf Benson not Wyton

It was six houses affected out of about thirty in what was termed the “Leper Colony" ie the married quarters away from the main areas and nearer to the runway.

Obviously planes took off all the time really loud and close but she can’t remember now what the reason was for the incident but it wasn’t taken lightly, people could have been injured etc.
