Best Software Freebies?

'Cnet.com' for internet security, antivirus, video converter. We all love freebies.

Amen to Cnet

And Microsoft Security Essentials :)

WildThing yes its on mine and quite good 'touch wood'. Avast, Panda and AVG also quite good.

Cnet pisses me off for one reason or another.

Some of the free utils I use:
uTorrent - for downloading of linux ISOs ...honest guv'
BurnAware Free - best simple CD/DVD burning software going
Eraser - secure file shredder
FileZilla - the best FTP client bar none
Nettalk - IRC client
VLC Media player - plays tons of media formats out the box, no codecs needed
DVD Decrypter (or ImgBurn) - great for ISO image creation and burning
DVD Flick - great avi/mp4/whatever to DVD conversion tool
VirtualDub - the best known free video editing 'suit'
CCleaner - originally called CrapCleaner and for a good reason, gets rid of shite on your PC
7zip - if you pay for WinZip or WinRAR you're silly, best free zipping util going
Microsoft Security Essentials - unobtrusive basic antivirus protection that just works
Google Chrome - ousted Firefox as my browser of choice last year
Get_iPlayer - awesome tool to rip BBC iPlayer shows and convert to mp4
Tree Size Free - find where all your space has gone on your HDD
FastStone Image Viewer - great tool, has *fantastic* photo editing capabilities given that its free
HDD Low Level Format Tool - when pesk shit won't fuck off your HDD/USB stick
VMWare Player - granted I now use VMWare Workstation but best free virtulisation tool available
Unified Remote - install the server on your PC then the android app on your phone and control your PC from your phone! I bought the full version though as I needed the Spotify Advanced Remote

Warning on AVG
It's a good security tool but not if you use a certain well known accounting package
It reacts against the data sorting needed to produce trial balances etc

You either have to switch it off or watch it ruin your expensive software

i have had problems with AVG in the past, better off trying different ones that are reccommended.

I second spotify for music.

tbh with places like ThePirateBay being constantly shut down, illeagal downloading is becoming way too much effort

Now I use spotify I rarely obtain music elsewhere, only if its hard to find (that you usually couldn't buy anyway), and pretty much bar the odd one or two things I prefer buying and owning films on bluray - looks great to have the Batman trilogy box set sat up on my dvd rack

Plain Jane - you can set exceptions in AVG to ignore individual files or any file in a selected folder. That way your accounts program will not be affected.

On the menu items at the top go to Options / Advanced Settings / Exceptions

awww thanks hun x

Might also be worth disabling heuristic scanning if that 'feature' exists in the free version of AVG

Yes, it does. When you create the Exception you can select to exclude it from Scans and / or Resident Shield

amydb69 it is illegal to download music files but but look for 'youtube to mp3 converter' online where you copy the youtube video id then paste the youtube video id into it and download as an mp3. not sure what the law is on that?

@ old but not that old. Thanks for the tip. Next time I replace my security ill try that

Using Kaspersky at the moment.

It's still strictly not legal, the program itself is because of course there are plenty of youtube videos that aren't copyrighted, but ripping a copyrighted song is illegal - the reason youtube has so many copyrighted songs available from unauthorised uploaders is because youtube introduced the 'I am the artist of this song and it breaches copyright I want to report it' option which keeps youtube legal under the DMCA

You say that downloading music is illegal but yet say that you freely rip programs from the bbc. Which is also illegal under piracy.
