I'd recommend getting one of everything.
A flogger, a paddle, a crop, a cane, and anything else you care to think of.
Remember, smaller surface area = bigger pain/redder mark/longer lasting for any given amount of effort.
Maybe also mix it up with some blindfoldedness, so you can't see the spanking coming.
Also, don't forget he could always use his hand.
The kitchen usually has lots of spanking resources - spoons/spatulas/pans(!)
Also, intersperse spanking with tickling/massage to heighten the senses.

My OH is not very confident in asking for something he would like to try, but I generally have an idea of what he is thinking of. We have experimented and learnt a lot of things about ourservelves and what we enjoy.
Recently I bought a flogger as a suprise. I didn't know for definate whether he would like it but I thought I would give it a go. The satin restraints are great as the texture is silky smooth and long enough that I could tie him up to almost anything!
I took things slow, tied him up and blindfolded him and ran the flogger over his body before beginning to hit him with it. Within minutes he was begging me to be hitting hit harder than I thought he would :)
The key is to start anything new slowly and build up to it to see what you both enjoy and feel comfortable with.
He definately likes me to be in charge and I imagine my next purchase may well be a gag.

I'd highly recommend a flogger. Me and the wife have always been into bondage but are just starting to explore new things and I cannot recommend this highly enough.
It's soft yet sharp which makes it fantastic for beginners as (like I did) if you swing it a little bit too hard you don't hurt that much more.
