Burlesque show - What to wear?

I'm really excited to be going to a burlesque show this weekend but I have no idea what I should wear. Last year I went to the same show and just wore a little black dress, but I'd like to wear something a bit more special this year. I was thinking of wearing this http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=27590 with a pencil skirt, but not sure. What would you wear? Any men that could comment also would be great as my partner is coming with me :)

Wow , that will look beautiful ! Yeah go for it I say x

I think you'll rock it xxx

Hope you get to see the show! As soon as your OH sees you in that he may have other ideas xxx

You will look great :)

Sounds perfect! Go for it x

That looks perfect to me, hun, and the pencil skirt; Christina Aguilera eat your heart out. I love burlesque, sooo jealous, hope you have a great time.

I agree .Teamed up with a pencil skirt would be the way to go. Pencil skirts are very sexy and enhance the rear. I prefer them to miniskirts any day.

Oh I love pencil skirts! So flattering and enhance what mamma gave ya!

Hope you have a great time!

Aw thank you everyone :) I feel much more confident about it now, I was worrying that it wouldn't be appropriate to wear x

Just been thinking . As well as the pencil skirt you could always wear it with a tailored jacked as well .Perhaps keep it buttoned up until you reach the venue .I bet you will look fantastic x

That will look gorgeous! And all you have to do is whip off your skirt when you get home lol I'd love to see a burlesque show hope you have fun :) xx

I agree with everyone else, definitely yes - you will look stunning in this! Hope you have a wonderful time :) xx

Oooh what fun!

When I go to burlesque shows I usually wear a corset over a pencil dress, or with a pencil skirt. Sometimes I'll do a retro circle dress or a simple blouse and jeans, but 9 times out of 10 I go with the corset and skirt combo. I think the top you've chosen is perfect!

For me, the MUST haves are

- a cinched waist
- seamed stockings
- heels
- winged eyeliner (and false lashes preferably)
- bright lipstick
- (and when my hair is long enough) victory rolls or something vintage
- a handheld fan (because DAMN it gets hot at a burlesque show!)

The overgarments are less important than the undergarments and accessories for me. I usually just think 'retro/pin up/vintage' and the rest falls into place.

As for guys, my man usually suits up and goes fancy. Again, think retro. Depending on what your chap likes to wear, a standard suit accessoriesed with a trilby hat, bow tie, braces and/or brougues always adds the perfect finishing touch! If he's not into suits, a pair of brothel creepers or doc martens with turned up jeans and a checked shirt, finished off with braces is a great look. Hair wise, if he can, a quiff is P-E-R-F-E-C-T (think 'Fonzie').

Basically, if you look like you could have just stepped out of Grease the movie, you've got it spot on!

But more impoartantly than anything else is to remember to take your voices! Whooping and cheering is a must. Don't forget, the more noise you make, the more clothes they take off!

Nice list Jess .

Instead of a bow tie there are some very nice original forties/fifties silk ties knocking about. I have a red one with cream markings on it . It looks fantastic with a light coloured suit .

We are lucky enough to have Aflecks Palace within a 20 mnute train ride . You would luv it there as it is full of stalls that sell retro clothes , many from the 50s .

I should add as well. The Tie is best knotted with a double windsor knot . My late father showed me how to do one of these and the half windsor .

Can I add to this, as the owner of a 19in neck, that if you are broad necked like myself, then to wear a double windsor you'll need an extra long tie. If I use a regular tie, then I use practically 3/4s of the tie round my neck and in the knot. I prefer the half windsor, and you still you get your counterstripe stripes with the half.
