If it has been a while between orgasms and I have been aroused without orgasming, I will sometimes do what I would call "pre-cum squirts", where its almost like a pressure valve has released just a bit, they tend to be quite small volumes of actual fluid and will shoot out, if I'm lying on my back, its not unusual to hit mid-upper chest area.
The gap between these squirts and full on orgasm isn't normally long. I don't tend to "shoot" at orgasm / ejaculation, more a strong dribble most of the time.
Certainly can't do it on demand, nor have any real control over when it happens

Hhhmm. Sounds a bit like me but I always considered it having a pee. If the top of the end of my old boy gets stroked or licked it will make me pee whether I need one or not. Same as if I hold the end of him under the shower.
Dont know if that makes any sense.

I don't know about this and it sounds like precum to me and this would be different to ejaculation and orgasm. My boyfriend gets lots of precum if he is turned on, enough to soak through his underwear but this generally just dribbles out whilst he is excited. He can squirt a good distance when he orgasms and ejaculates but he also gets wet dreams whilst he is asleep now and then where he has ejaculated (he has a load of semen in his underwear) but has not had the feeling of an orgasm.

I think it's this also. I don't know of anything else that squirts out of men! My boyfriend currently has the reverse going on, he takes an anti-depressant and now has a hard time (no pun intended) reaching his orgasm. When he finally reaches the point and feeling of orgasm there is very little cum and often none at all although he finds it can dribble out some time after.
Following the advice of my work colleague I got my husband to try and squirt. Is it not just pee that squirts out? I find that rubbbing just the tip of my glans with the palm of my hand is almost unbearable, nice but unbearable for more than a few seconds at a time. A couple of times I have endured it and discovered it just provokes a stream of pee eventually. I don’t quite understand how it can be that sensitive to stimulation of that kind.
It depends if you haven’t orgasmed in a while. Also if you tease for ages normally you can make a man squirt!

The nearest thing is for me is, if I've been edging my self for a couple of weeks I can have an explosive orgasm and cum hard and shoot a fair distance but I wouldnt calling squirting.
As an add on sometimes after a long time edging, next time I get aroused and hard I just start leaking out spunk at quite a rate, but it's leaking not squirting.
If I spend a few days edging without cumming I would eventually leak out a LOT of precum. When I finally orgasmed it would be a near continuous spurt like a fountain.
That would take around 20 days without cumming though - so not always worth it!

After a couple of weeks of trying I think that last night I managed to squirt.
I was in the shower washing my bits, as you do, when the shower spray started to hit my nob head. This felt quite nice so I let it continue, as it began to feel tender and sensitive in a good way. After a few minutes I had the uncontrollable urge to pee and I squirted a little clear liquid. It felt nice but it was no orgasm. Once out of the shower I had a pee which was the usual yellowish colour and plenty of volume. I don’t really know what the squirt liquid was but I think it came from my bladder. Can’t wait to see if I can do it again!
I'd say guys 'squirt' most times they orgasm, but in smaller amounts than women can. Maybe not having sex for a while, like Senator describes, edging and stimulating the prostate is a good way to increase the volume of the fluid, and the force of the ejaculation. Control of the squirt is a bit trickier to predict for me too. Guess more practice may help! xD
The OP's question kinda challenges my ideas of what male squirting is. I'm really interested in the different answers people have given. Here's my own understanding, for background:
The fluid men produce from the prostate, prostatic fluid, first dribbles out as pre-cum and is shot out (about a teaspoon's worth typically), with sperm if there are any, during orgasm.
In women, the Skene's gland (or female prostate) produces virtually the same fluid in a typical female gusher, and (typically) produces something like a tablespoon to a cupful. The female prostate has up to three times more glands and ducts, so produces more fluid, and is more dramatic, particularly where multiple orgasms and multiple squirting comes into play!

The position of the Skene's gland; surrounding the urethra, is the same as for a guy's prostate. I'm genuinely blown away by the idea that so much of the female & male sexual organs are basically pretty similar; frenulum area has similarities to the clitoris, g-spot is similar to the p-spot, etc, but these develop differently for different people, and we experience orgasms differently too.
In women I've heard the ejaculation can be produced with or without orgasm. For us guys I'd never heard of squirting without orgasm before. Intriguing thought...
