Bought a flogger for some low key spanking fun, my wife loves its so much she would love to try something a liitle firmer. What is best next any suggestions ? 
Not sure, wife has just started wanting to try a little light BDSM and bought a flogger and a crop, waiting for it to arrive.... I'd probably look for a beginners crop.
Cane can be a little harsh on the skin.

A cane can be a very intense impact toy and is not for the feight hearted. I would personally suggest you try a paddle next. A great starter paddle which I have is this one as it has 2 sides - one soft and one firmer:

I am a novice and I have this one too. I love it though I think I prefer the flogger.
Let's cut to the chase here, once you've started you can't stop, just get one of each and enjoy!!
I agree with Sum sub. Get a cheap one of everythingnn and work out what you like and don't like but canes are sore and on the extreme end of the scale. xx
I have that paddle and crop, they're perfect for beginners. I would highly recommend them :)
I would say a paddle is good for beginners. My OH and I are fairly new to it but so far like the paddle.
I started out with the FSOG paddle, I must say I'm glad it was. It can be nice & nasty depending on which side you use but both sides are very pleasurable on the skin.
Get the paddle first and then a crop. A cane can is nothing for a beginner, it can leave serious marks and easily breaks the skin, its also quite painful.
Warm her up with the flogger, then proceed to the paddle. When her skin is properly warmed up and her bottom feels hot you can start applying the crop lightly and work your way up with it. Always be mindful of bruising when working with a crop and be sure to work not too high on the hips as you could hit the kidneys which is an absolute no-no.
In case your wife loves pain a real cane is quite cheap and so are willow branches. You can make her cut her own and have her clean it (free it of the bark) when you have a nice romantic sunday afternoon walk in the park. ;-)

I like the idea of a crop, never done this before but considering buying one. I think a crop would be good because I can make her stand facing a wall, or laying down and use it to stroke over her body inner thighs etc as well as using it for some gentle spanking

Crops take a little bit of skill to use. We have a lot of fun with when we use the crop for soft play, just not practiced enough to land 20 good blows in succession.
