I would always prefer en suites and if I’m able to fund an En Suite be it rent/buy I would always take that.
That being said I’d be content with just the traditional layout

Speaking for the US - Mrs. Kat is a Realtor (estate agent) and had a client last year that was selling a house without and en-suite and it was a major road block for the majority of buyers. In the end that one thing cost the seller over $70K when you compared the selling price to comparable houses that had an en-suite.
Now thats the US and that only matters if you are going to sell eventually.
Personally I would never even consider a house without one. Let me qualify that - I would consider it if the house had the ability to have an en-suite added and everything else about the house was amazing. But again, Im coming from a perspective of having the vast majority of houses with them built in already so saying that the house has to have one is only eliminating a tiny fraction of available homes. My view might be different if it eliminated the majority of houses.
Depends on the needs of your family really.
We have a four bedroomed detached property; two of the bedrooms have en-suites and then there is a master bathroom, which has a bath and a separate shower. There is also a downstairs toilet.
So in total we have three showers, a bath and four toilets. We are a married couple with two teenage children and we have house-guests on occasion, so having access to these facilities makes life much easier, particularly when we have people staying over.
Like others have said though, it depends on your family unit and the sort of social life you lead.
