En-suites in houses

I am lucky enough to have a decent sized, modern three bedroomed house to myself, with an upstairs bathroom, including a bath/shower combo. I also have a downstairs loo. Therefore two loos.

I am also lucky that I have a nice house in the pricey area of town and love the area.

However, all my other relatives and some of my friends have bedrooms with en-suite. Admittedly, most have family and my mum, who lives alone has a five bedroom house, with two downstairs w/cs, an upstairs bathroom and the master bedroom with en-suite, being a totally separate room/door to the bedroom. She has quite a large house.

I know a lot of modern houses these days have en-suite and they are fashionable, but have I missed something in buying a house without one?

Do you like/dislike en-suites and would viewing a house without one put you off buying it?

No you haven’t missed anything like partners it’s personal preference. With pros and cons either way.

also lived in houses with and without and am happy either way.

Depending on how many people are in the house, an en-suite may or not be necessary. We had one in our last house, and it was great to be able to shuffle off to the loo in the middle of the night without having to leave the bedroom. The down side is if you then only have one other bathroom, there may be times when guests or other family members need to use the bathroom when you are in the bedroom, not ideal. Plus, with the en-suite, you do not always have as much privacy or separation from your OH when you need to use the facilities. With a un-connected loo, you do have that isolation, so in case you desperately need a wank, or ate something that didn’t agree with your digestive tract.

The houses we’ve owned have had en-suites, and to be fair get used more than the main bathroom. Probably because we prefer showers over a bath.

Not particularly bothered by en suites, who want’s to be lying in bed when you partner stinks out the bedroom with his daily dump, or wake them up with the sound of flushing! :joy: This year stayed in accomodation with an ensuite toilet 3 times, and didn’t use it, not even for a wee. To me it’s no trouble to walk a few metres to the main bathroom. If you’re worrying about it as a status symbol cos other people have them, then you’ll never be happy as someone will always have something newer of better than you. I felt the same way about conservatories when they became fashionable. In the winter they’re too cold, and summer too hot, and if it’s warm and sunny i would rather sit in my garden. Now you see companies advertising roof blinds or insulated roof’s for them because of the heat/cold problem!

We don’t have an ensuite but have two shower rooms, one upstairs the other downstairs. If we have guests they stay in one of the downstairs bedrooms and use the facilities downstairs. Most of the time it’s just us so it doesn’t matter if we pop to the loo naked.

Old country cottage here. 1 upstairs loo and a downstairs bathroom. Quite often just walking around naked to go take a shower.

An upstairs shower would be nice especially if things get messy with lube everywhere but not an option.

No house should EVER have only one bathroom ! Every time we visit my nephew and his wife, we have to deal with only one loo, with four adults who need it. They take long showers, and even longer potty breaks. Between that and an overly aggressive dog in the house, finding a moment to take care of your needs is dicey. These days, in a modern house, one main bath and some form of half-bath is nescessary.

We’ve never had an ensuite and I’m not overly bothered having one. We do have a separate toilet upstairs and downstairs though which is handy.

Even when we had three kids living at home we all coped with just the one bathroom. In fact when I was a child we lived in one place that didn’t even have a bathroom and only had a horrible outside toilet!

I like my en suite as I use that while my wife uses the main bathroom. Definitely wouldn’t be a deal breaker to not have one though, but i do like the convenience. I use it for the shower moreso than anything else though. I do get what people are saying about using the toilet while your partner is in the bed and absolutely would hear everything.

We love en-suites in a hotel. The proximity to the bed makes it a real win for us and it becomes part of the session. But we converted our en-suite at home to walk in storage. We needed the space and couldn’t justify two bathrooms.

But it was also the proximity to the neighbours bedroom wall ( which is quite thin and we hear everything ). Going for a :poop: or what ever felt uncomfortable and damp from the shower was a pain.

I live on my own in a flat with an en-suite, it wasn’t something I was particularly looking out for, but it was nice to have. It’s actually come in handy when there were issues with one of the showers and I could just use the other bathroom instead. I only really use the main bathroom these days though and the en-suite just means there’s double the cleaning.

For a family though, I’m sure it’s a great idea to have an en-suite.

I liked having an en-suite in the flat I used to rent, and moving home to not having one and sharing one bathroom again was an adjustment but it doesn’t bother me either way.

Looking for a flat/house to buy, whether it has an en-suite or not isn’t a dealbreaker, if it has one, great, if not, it’s just me so 1 bathroom is plenty! I liked the convinience of an en-suite when living with a partner.

I’d just be ecstatic to have a second toilet!! I’ve always lived with my parents in a 3 bedroom with one bathroom! Needless to say I can’t believe how I’ve survived all this time

If we had children we would certainly consider a house with an en-suite but it’s just the 2 of us so it’s unnecessary.

Now a house with a large walk in wardrobe would be a different story.

Thank you.

Maybe I have been overthinking.
