Been meaning to try a gag out but really not sure what to give a try as I we have not really done it before. Is there like a beginner style of gag? Don’t want to be drooing all over the place. Seen the open mouth ones with holes in them all the way to the penis shaped ones or the stick of wood, generic ball or some odd medical looking ones.
Do people get much out of it? Or is it just part of the BDSM equipment?

A simple ball gag with holes in is probably best as a starter because they’re generally smaller and it’s easier to breathe with it in. But I guess it depends what you want the gag for - different gags serve different purposes. What is it you’re after?
I would also say that I’ve yet to encounter a gag that doesn’t make the wearer drool at least a little bit.

Prob something to go with the blindfold and the restraints to add to it I guess. Just something we have not tried and there is a lot out there, like the ones you bite on or suck. Even found one that electrocuted the wearer for some reason.

Gags usually are just for silencing a submissive and the drool can be slightly humiliating. Most gags will cause the wearer to drool as its difficult to swallow with your mouth held open etc.
If you are curious about being silenced you could always just use some tape or tie something fabric like over or in your mouth. Use the other halfs underwear or something.
Gags arent for everyone but if you are curious id say go for a small ballgag, made of a softer material.

I sometimes get hubby to wear them and he doesn’t mind at all - I would say that he enjoys feeling helpless and at my mercy 
We recently purchased a new one and had an evening of swapping roles so I let him use it on me.
I discovered that they just aren’t for me personally, I didn’t enjoy feeling so submissive and the drool wasn’t pleasant neither.
I would say that if it is something you want to try then go for it as you can get one for less than a tenner.

My suggestion would be to start simple with it, either a small solid or breathable ball gag. Smaller ones will be easier to get used to and may create less drool, although note that drool is inevitable whenever you put something in their mouth. Breathable ones (a hollow ball with air holes) will probably make a novice wearer feel more comfy, and it will be easier to hear if they are in distress and need to stop. If you both enjoy that then you can experiment with more advanced/kinky versions.
My personal favourites are metal gags. Ones that adjust (a Jenkins) and/or keep the mouth open and…uhhh….accessible….are the most fun, but then I’m a mean mean person so ymmv.

I’m always eyeing up the bondage boutique black rose ball gag as I have a few thing in the collection, but never purchased it yet!
We started playing with some bondage a few years back and as most do we started with a blindfold and some cuffs but the gag has become real favorite. If you’re just starting out then a smallish ballgag is probably the way to go, you can get them with breathing holes too although we have never found the solid ones (even quite big ones) particularly restrictive on that front.
My wife really likes wearing a gag (fine by me!) and she started out wearing it on its own to get used to it before adding other things into the mix like the blindfold. When you have both on you really do feel very powerless and if you’re unsure then it might be a bit much to start with.
The drooling is kind of inevitable (part of the appeal) but the smaller gags make you drool less. We have a few ball gags and an open mouth gag which I love her wearing when she gives me a blowjob although a while back she popped it on me then sat on my face which was pretty incredible I have to say. I’ll definitely be asking her to do that again! We’ve never tried the penis shapes or inflatable ones.
For me, I mostly love seeing her in a big red ballgag. It’s the aesthetic of it and having her at my mercy. My wife loves to kiss and finds that having that ability taken away really winds her up, especially if I kiss her on the mouth while she’s gagged and she can’t kiss back.
Try a couple and see what works for you, there’s no right or wrong.

Yes that would sound like what I was thinking about for a gag. Can you actually get a good bite on the round ball ones, thought the long fat pencil shaped ones like a horse bit might be better for bitting.
I heard of an awesome trick over the weekend where people line duct tape with cloth tape found in first aid kits. Cloth tape is much more gentle on skin and won’t rip away hairs. It makes for a mind fuck when you put it on because they think it’s going to be super painful coming off.
