We've used the lovehoney one that came in bundles and the OH loved using it on me, but the ridges are just a little too much and leave me quite sore, he suggested we get one with less ridges, one that looks like a willy maybe.

All of these are tried and tested by my wife and I. They are all good fun not just for vaginal but also anal / prostate massage. Having two different styled ends gives you different sensation feelings as well.
If you are finding yourself a little sore then maybe you should also use some lube for extra smooth lubrication and added fun.

3.5 inches in circumference isn't that slim for glass. Because there isn't any give to it, many people prefer glass a bit smaller than their favourite circumference in silicone or other materials with a bit of give. There's discussion of it in several threads in the archives.
