Does it stay on once button is pressed or do you have to keep pressing button ??
You definitely don’t have to keep holding any buttons. Once on and vibrating as you want it, it should just keep going unless you press a button to change either the strength or pattern.

I would not have thought you have to keep your finger on the button once on/selected. It may be worth speaking to customer care.
Is the item vibrating twice when the button is pressed? The item might have the Travel Lock turned on 
To turn it off: Hold both buttons down for 2 seconds, a double buzz means the travel lock is on. To deactivate, press and hold both buttons for 2 seconds.
