How to deep clean leather?

I found a leather vest at my local second-hand charity shop and would like to make a flogger out of it. However, it's used and I'd like to clean it very well first. For safety reasons I wouldn't want to bring dirt, bacteria or cleaning chemicals into my bedroom fun.

The leather is beige-brown, very soft and feels like suede or something similar. So, how do I clean it?

Here LH suggests using a specialist leather cleaner and leather oil. https://www.lovehoney.co.uk/blog/2008/10/26/how-to-look-after-your-bondage-gear/ Saddle soap is suggested here https://www.lovehoney.com/blog/2017/02/20/house-keeping-clean-care/ Does anyone know of any kinds or brands that are skin-safe? (remember it's not allowed to link to LH competitors) Is leather oil needed, or will it be absorbed and cause stains?

Has anyone got any better and safer cleaning tips? =)

Personally i would check out products specifically for cleaning leather sofa`s as they ought to be skin safe. But check out the instructions/info first.

Do you have any idea where I could find such products? I'm pretty sure my local super markets don't have any. Should I look online instead? And will they all be ok to use on this leather? Asking since almost all real-öeather sofas I've seen are the kinkd of thick, stiff and ''shiny''/ non absorbant leather.

Our local supermarkets sell such stuff, usually packs of individually wrapped impregnated cloths. Maybe Ebay if your local shops don`t sell it? If it`s for absorbent rough leather, maybe search for suede cleaner?

I think I should look for suede cleaner and then google all the listed ingredients if I can find any.

Bigger supermarkets in Sweden might sell such cleaners, but I live in a tiny town and the only things available here are shoe polish (definitely not for this leather) and some leather cleaning wipes full of chemicals that aren't skin-safe.

I remembered you lived in a Scandinavian country but couldn't remember which one! Yes, suede is likely best for your needs, as is Ebay, hopefully you can find something skin-safe. 🙂

As a general rule, products designed for cleaning saddles are a good bet for leather. Lexol is one of th big brands. You get a spray/cream, which lifts dirt out of the leather. Then once you've wiped all this off, you use a conditioner to feed the leather.

If your item is soft calf leather or something, you should still be fine with this kind of product.

They are generally non-toxic, Ph-balanced, and should be fine for skin contact. I've certainly got them all over my hands when using them, and they seem quite gentle. My skin is normally prone to irritation.

However, if it is nubuck/suede you will need a specialised spray to clean these, and preferably a suede brush to properly clean without ruining the nap of the material. I don't think you can condition suede after cleaning, but I'm not sure.

Suede sprays are often aerosol I think, and normally have water retardent chemicals in to protect suede shoes/clothes. I wouldn't be particularly confident about their being gentle on sensitive skin.

Do you have a dry cleaners anywhere near you? It might be a little more expensive but probably the best bet to make sure you aren’t going to damage it, especially if you aren’t 100% sure what it is made of

Thank you all so much for your comments and advice! ![](upload://4WyQT1gwKaQJNwhYxrKZ1rOPglF.gif)

defam: Not sure what animal it is from, but it's super soft and looks like suede. The fronds of this flogger is the most similar I could find on LH https://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=34132

On the tag it says ''No dry-cleaning fluid stronger than R-113. Max working temperature 30C. Must be re-greased.'' So I should use a suede conditioner after cleaning it. Found some that are in regular spray bottles and others that have a sponge-like applicator.

I checked on Lexol's website and it says that their products are not recommended for suede or extremely soft leathers. However, I did find suede/ nubuck cleaning kits from other brands that have good reviews. They include a cleaning spray and a brush. I just need to ckeck if the ingredients are skin safe (for the conditioner, too)

kelly_michelle: Not sure if there's a dry cleaner in my town, but I am worried the leather will absorb the chemicals used and then it might not be safe to use for impact play. Before going all-in, I can test any product on a bit that I won't use to make sure it doesn't damage or discolour it. =)
