Don’t know if this is the right place but here goes. I’m 65, last had sex in 2008/2009 and all my ‘smears’ have been clear. Except my last one in April which should’ve been my last one ever. It came back high risk HPV with no cell changes. I’ve read the NHS info leaflet and googled and googled for more information but I ain’t taking any of it in. Has anyone else been in the same position and willing to share some advice in easy to understand language please?
Have a read of this: Human papillomavirus (HPV) - NHS
If you’re unsure of anything then you really should consult a medical professional.
I can second this source, useful and easy to understand.
Thanks Gareth, I emailed a cancer advice place and explained 2 members of my immediate family had cervical cancer and another 1 has high risk of vulva cancer but I was given a link to go to and read more and told not to worry. Supposedly 80% of people either have it or will get it .
Thanks Charlie, I’ll give it a go.
It is very common, a few friends have it and it doesn’t affect them.
However, with your high risk status and family history, I would’ve expected more of an empathetic response than not to worry!
The NHS page @Gareth linked is the only page you should look at, if you’re in the UK, I cannae mind if you are. Obvs the link provided by the cancer advice service, but no googling!
I would expect that your gynae will want you to have regular check ups and if they don’t, I’d book the appointments anyway.
Thanks Jocat, aye I’m in Scotland. I know that no cell change is good but it’s the high risk bit that I don’t like. The test result letter said I’ve to get a repeat test in 12 months, so aye it’s a lot sooner than the usual 3 years. Guess I’ll put it to the back of my mind and see what happens next year .
Thanks again ![]()
Yup, its understandably worrying but the positive is that you’re informed, you’re getting a check next year and there haven’t been any cell changes ![]()

Not me but my Mum (a similar age to yourself) had two results for HPV with abnormal changes, she had two colposcopies with LLETZ biopsies and got the all-clear afterwards both times. It is stressful, but try not to panic. They can deal with anything risky well before it becomes cancer ![]()
Thank you, that’s reassuring, glad your mum’s ok now ![]()
