Is porn art?

I once did an essay on the question and after much debate with myself and friends I came to conclusion that yes it is or at the very least can be under certain conditions.

It’s been on my mind again recently and thought it would be an interesting question to ask to the forum. I’d love to know what other people’s thoughts are.

I don’t think it is Art, imo

I’m not a fan of porn personally but I can’t let my personal opinion affect this as it’s a valid question.

Oh, I googled and asked if tv shows and movies were art and this was the blurb returned.

"Though some might argue that it is simply a form of entertainment, there are substantial reasons to view film as a visual art form. In fact, it’s often considered one of the greatest art forms and, by some, the highest form of artistic expression."

Like all things on this planet, some will say it is and others will say it isn’t.

So it comes down to the personal opinion of folks on here as well as those not on this forum.

While I’m not a fan of porn, I do think it can be art. I say can be because there is a huge difference in the quality of porn that is made, how it’s produced, directed, acted etc.

So where I land is that some porn may be considered art.

I think it depends on the individual and its a very personal thing as what everyone likes is different .music is considered an art form but there is lots of genres I Don’t like as opposed to others so perhaps this applies to porn too.

Film is an art. Fact.

Many films are ‘bad’ art, populist, low on artistic merit or whatever, but as a medium film is a creative art form. Subject matter is largely irrelevant.

Porn can be art, the overwhelming majority would not pass most people’s bar to be considered art. Frankly its exactly the same as any other film.

I’d say that it’s subjective, some people only consider classical paintings and sculptures to be art whereas others class paintings and sculptures as well as films, photography and Modern art as art too.

Personally I wouldn’t say it is, erotic art like painting in my opinion is but porn as in video isn’t

I agree with many of the replies. The question is absolutely subjective because what one values as art can be hugely subjective.

I think to me something that has intention and takes skill and effort, is art. I think much of porn (at least that done outside of amateur porn) is done with the above. Even down to how someone moves their body, the sounds their making, the angles it’s filmed from, even the scenario.

I mean there’s even merit to amateur porn being art. To compare I think many on this forum would agree when I say taking nudes can sometimes take effort, the right angle, the right (indecent :face_with_hand_over_mouth:) clothing, the right facial expression. I want it to look good. It may be questionable if nudes are porn but at least porn adjacent haha.

But I think many would also argue nudes aren’t art, yet does that mean boudoir pictures also aren’t considered art ? Yet that’s something people often frame and hang in their bedroom.

Tangent aside I think yes it very much depends on what you consider art to be.

I think thats a philosophical question and no ones ever going to agree. I did fine art so I’m biased but my opinions no more valid or right than anyone else.

I’d say 99% of porn is not art. Some of it could be considered a craft or erotic-art. I’m thinking of the likes of Hegre and a lot of photographers as @WillC points out.

Porn is about creating a physical sensation, arousal, titilation, call it what you want, using objectification as its main source. The goal is primarily financial profit, and for amateurs a degree of satisfaction from exhibitionism. There are no, what people might consider, lofty goals in porn.

Art is about intellectual expression, the posing of often difficult questions, demanding engagement from the viewer, the conveying of challenging and often new conceptual ideas, pushing and expanding societal norms and expectations, and often an innovative use of medium. Art is rarely reproducable or created primarily with profit as the end goal.

Craft is more about technique, aesthetic/decoration and the creation of a .. product. Craft is more often formulaic and reproducable.

Now about Banksy ..

Thanks for that write up, it certainly adds a meaningful data point to the discussion about this.

Loved this response, so in your opinion, if someone created porn with it’s primary aims outside of just financial profits or solely sexual satisfaction could it be potentially be considered art/borderline art ? Or would it arguably no longer be considered porn ?

Lets see how often I use the word often .. often.

I’d assume the latter .. its stepped out of the constraints of porn. So what new aims or goals are you thinking of??

And to expand on something I mentioned.

I used to enjoy Lustery videos when I could find them. They liked to sell themselves as a step above the Bang Bros and others; real couples having real sex, in their own environment, filmed themselves. But thats just pre-packaged amateur porn they charged you for.

Hegre is formulaic and all about the consistent product with a refined aesthetic. That to me is craft and they’re very good at it.

It’s a no from me!

I think basic porn doesn’t count as art, but artistic erotic photography and paintings etc definitely do.

The films that Four Chambers (a four chambered heart) produce may fit into that category. From their own site:

Four Chambers is a project, an idea and an ongoing collaboration with the intention to explore the aesthetic and conceptual potential of pornography as a creative medium for ideas.
