I imagine I might get slapped for saying that
“hoe” in the US is often short for “whore” and specifically used when desiring to convey disrespect and contempt for the person you’re insulting.
Though it’s specifically context based. If you say I want a hoe-dad (which isn’t the most common term for “subway sandwich” anyway imo) I don’t think you’d have to be worried.
But if you say “you hoe” then it’s almost up there with saying “Texas sucks”
Disclaimer: I don’t think Texas sucks. It’s at the very least better than California. I was simply using the phrase as an example. Please do not hunt me down 
Edit: also it’s typically a female calling another female a ‘hoe’
Also, other than using quotation marks to directly quote someone, I have no idea which situations are which as far as when to use ’ or "

I doubt that you’re going to get slapped it’s just a old term for biscuit in your rural area’s of the south in va,nc,sc and some people say they want a cat head biscuit

Yeah. Using “hoe cakes” in general probably wouldn’t solicit a slap. Should have corrected that in the post. Good catch

Too cool! I am from the US too. I’m curious, can you tell whether someone is from the North or South US when talking to people from the US. I know we can tell, but can British people tell?

There may be some words that stick out, but I can’t think of what they are off the top of my head.
Only chatted with one person that was from Florida (not on this site that I know of). But if she hadn’t mentioned she was from FL I wouldn’t have known. Not that I consider FL to be “southern”, at least not stereotypically.
Probably only from very broad stereotypes. “This here is the most rootin-tootin vibrator I’ve ever tried!” 
I’m afraid I don’t know anything specific about Tennessee. Jack Daniels? Lynchburg. Um. Memphis? That’s all I got without google.
