They seem to be the new in thing at the moment, but what do you make of Massage Candles?
We've all had a play with them here at LH HQ - they're just that bit more interesting than a massage oil, particularly the warming aspect. But they do take a while to melt!
Because they're new and we've been learning about them ourselves, we've written a new guide to Massage Candles up on the blog.
Have you got any top tips for massage candles? What's your favourite?
I do prefer a separate candle and oil, I feel like I'm wasting it doing one or the other otherwise, but they can be fun.
Top tip? Errr... have a none massage candle so that when you have poured your massage oil and bits get stuck at the sides you can just hold the solid wax on the sides over the flame and remelt it back into the main pool.
I loved the smell of the Strawberries & Champagne candle in the Monogamy Extra's Kit... Just seen they do a large version too, that's going on the wishlist!
I love massage candles. I have the grape edible massage candle/oil. The edible part is open for debate on its taste etc but it works wonderfully for its other uses and has a beautiful aroma.
I haven't yet used it as a romantic session as of yet but would like to. Some tips that I have picked up are to leave the candles to melt for half an hour or so and then extinguish the flame before pouring on your partner so they don't get burned (or are less likely to).
They're quite expensive but are worth it. I'm a big fan of them. =]

I love the one we were sent to review. Obviously, we have nothing to compare it to, but it is the best massage product we own, and the best fragrance. It was simply mindblowing, warm, smooth and very very sexy. In fact we used it again last night.

Top tip - always check the temperature of the oil before you pour or brush on. Ours was fine, and I'm sure all massage candles have a low melting point, but I'm a little paranoid about safety. It's just been near a hot, hot flame, so test it! Nowhere tells you to do this, although they do mention allergy testing, as with all skin products.

I love the sensation of the hot oil on my skin - that's something you don't get from a bottle of massage oil and something I didn't think I'd love as much as I do!
The only small downside I can see is that the amount of hot oil you have to use is dictated by the max burn time of the candle, unless you're able to re-light the candle, which we found wasn't ideal given that my Husbands hands were covered in the massage oil and I was in a trance-like state of relaxation!!!
Alice - are there massage candles available that have say an hours+ burn time?

Hi MrsP, a little peruse of the Massage Candles section may help as each candle has what it weighs in grams incorporated into the product name. Some of the Earthly Body candles in particular are large - nearly 200g in some of them.
I think the candles specifically avoid stating burn time because obviously if you're pouring the wax out it could vary wildly. This 600g jimmyjane whopper does state a burn time of 72 hours (but I suspect this is without syphoning any off for massage).
I've just bought 3 earthly body candles - dreamsicle, hollyberry and cherry. They all smell delicious!!!
We had a jimmy Jane one and an earthly body one,i have to say i prefer the Jimmy Jane one but the earthly body one is nice too. I wish i'd never looked now, i've just seen some i'd like to try but we are skint! Bloody kids wnting Christmas presents! I'll have to wait until after Christmas now!

Though I now uderstand the logic of avoiding specific instructions on the packaging. I must admitt, we never follow burn time instructions on regular candles, though we don't leave them unattended, we just leave them going all evening in the case of the heftier candles as apposed to tealights.

Ah, I see what you mean. I think the suggestion is for 30 minutes maximum to stop the candle getting overly hot. Proceed with caution and keep testing the temperature of the oil and you may feel you can exceed 30 minutes.

read the review for our full thoughts, but basically they're pretty hot stuff. Stingy, ouchy, almost-didn't-like-it hot, in fact.
Massage candles are warm and sensual, these are made to stimulate, not relax!
In fact, I've played with ordinary candles in the past and don't remember them burning as hot as these ones. Might be worth experimenting, but be careful! The rule is (supposedly!) white melts cooler, coloured wax tends to be hotter when molten. These special candles are obviously designed to be safe despite the colour, but you may find something even cooler a more comfortable place to start exploring this type of play.
Top tip - wax straight from the wick is HOT; to tone it down a little, either let it drip from a greater height (splashy, though!) or let it trickle down the side of the candle before it drips. In fact, don't know why we didn't try that ourselves. Guess I was just copying what I'd done with other candles before. Hmmm. Must try again.
