Depending on how adventurous you want to be, I’d recommend trying sounding out, I imagine it wouldn’t be for everyone (I had a bit of Dutch courage before I tried for the first time), but it’s a great feeling and fairly cheap to try. I’d recommend using a metal one though.

I am basically retired so have lots of time some days. I enjoy jerking mildly with lube for a few hours at a time.
