More advice on how to start a sex toy review blog (lengthy post)

Hey everyone,

I already read a post by someone else here some days ago asking how to start a toy review blog and so I could make up the courage t ask some other questions!

I am really motivated to get "free" sex toys, lubes, massage oils, lingerie i.e. all that keeps my long distance relationship alive. I could not afford everything I need for my sexy encounters otherwise and joining a sex toy reviewer program has changed my life for the better.

I already write for a sex shop blog that "pays" me with free toys, however I am not able to ask for what I need\want: they just send me something they need me to take photos of for the product page. I have been approached by companies via social media and a big toy manufacturer recently sent me some items to review, but I obviously can't ask companies to send me toys for review on a sex shop blog, and it feels weird to ask companies to send me samples to review on a site I am just a guest blogger...hmmmm

BUT, I am so insecure about opening my own sex toy blog because I have a full time day job I love. I will only have a couple hours a day to run it.

What worries me the most, is not being able to get enough following: I have chosen my adult friendly subdomain name (REMOVED BY MODERATOR) 'cause I really LOVED the fancy name and it is wordpress based but their platform doesn't offer any SEO plugin like Yoast. I really want to start with a free subdomain 'cause I am already enough tight on monies ;)

I can't earn via affiliate programs because in my country I would need to open a VAT number right from the start and it's very, very expensive. So, I would just be a guest blogger somewhere but I miss the freedom of contacting on my own European toy companies to ask for what I'd like to review!

The toy reviewer program I am a part of now is UK-based and I think I will need to give up on it when UK will get out of EU and there will be custom taxes to pay.

Thanks for taking the time for reading my post and, hopefully, to give me some advice! I feel much better now that I have let it all out!

I just started my own blog through Wordpress. I am having a hard time figuring out how to work the affiliate program through lovehoney though. I referred a friend to my blog to purchase a lovehoney item I put on my blog and didn’t see any commission. So I believe I am missing a step. I might have to call either lovehoney or webgains and get some direction. My wife and I are really excited about trying all different types of sexy toys and taking our sexual adventures to the next level, but we are having a hard time figuring if we are doing the blog right. If you or anyone else doesn’t mind, take a look at my blog and help me with some advice. My blog is

Hi MissDoll

Welcome to the forum.

You said you have lots of questions, but it looks like you forgot to include them in your original post 😜

What is it you'd like to know in particular?

Clear questions help get clear answers 😊

It looks like you have a lot of stuff on your plate doll and maybe you need to simplify it all. Getting money for a blog is pretty difficult with everyone know on the internet trying to be the biggest and best you have a lot of competition and companies won’t just give cash to anyone unless it benefits them.
You say you have a job you enjoy which is great and you have your blogging site which you have running and ready to go but seem to be stressed about the time it takes to post reviews etc. I would stop there and realise it will suck the fun out of what you enjoy if you look at this like a second job. I usually unwind in the evening by writing reviews and draft them in an email to double check them the next day before adding them to Lovehoney and this works well and fits with my career which is why I enjoy it. I have no pressure and it’s a side project I can pick up and do when I feel the time is right.

I’m not a legal advisor and have no idea about the way money works online, but some sites will give you the full run down of blogging and the best ways to get sponsored etc. So it may be worth googling a few bits and pieces. I probably have the entire wrong end of the stick and maybe you just want to rant ha. But as jess said, clear answers get clear questions.

Hey guys,

Thanks for your kind answers!

Anyway, I worked out the courage to start my own blog and all is going well for now ;) I am having a great fun with my first posts

In another post I read someone mentioning the "bloggers' thread" here on the forum where we can share some post, is this something? How does it work? I have a non-sex-toy-related post I'd like to share about queer sex positive porn

Love,

MissDoll

Hi MissDoll,

Great that you started blogging! Sorry I didn't respond to your original message, I didn't feel like I had more knowledge than you. I feel like I'm a pretty inexperienced, especially when it comes to money, you seem to be very knowledgeable.

Anyway, he's the link to the bloggers thread:

https://www.lovehoney.co.uk/community/forums/sex-tips-and-talk/1522126-lovehoney-bloggers-brand-spanking-new/

Lovehoney don't allow you to link to any post that is promoting another company tho. Personal posts that don't promote anything are fine, or posts that only promote Lovehoney.

Enjoy blogging! :)

I've been blogging on and off for years. I started blogging regularly a year ago when I took part in an online student challenge where I was emailed a prompt once a week. Searching for blogging prompts might be able to give you some inspiration to start off with.

Some of the bloggers on here take part in #SOSS which is Share Our Sh¡t Saturday (you can search this tag on Twitter). #SOSS is a good way to network and see how other people blog.

I also found some elements of this how-to video helpful for me (in terms of layout and frequency of posts...)

Great advice on this post! Thanks Jezebella for the link, that's exactly what I was looking for!

Thanks нинаnin too, I think I'll be a part of Share Our Shit Saturday this week!
