I had a picture up, came here 2 look around and low and behold my avatar is gone! Anyone know if this is a common issue or simply my mistake?

Because profile pictures are manually removed (as far as I remember) some people can have them up for weeks, as unless they're reported they'll stay up until a member of staff notices it and removes it. (if it has broken the rules)
Your best bet is to speak to customer care to find out the reason is was removed.
I can't imagine why! unless you were nude, or had a toy in you on display or engaged in a sex act on your avi!

I wouldn't put it back up. It has been removed for a reason. Putting it back up could result in your getting banned. I'd remove it and wait until customer service respond with why it has been removed.
