Totally new to trying out some light bondage with my husband. (I initiated).
I purchased the domonatrix hog ties they are Velcro.
I didn’t really enjoy using them as I could just undo them and i felt kind if silly! I also felt the cross was always in the way and it was really awkward doing anything.
Any help would be appreciated! lol
Velcro isn’t the most secure of fastening so if you are finding them easy to get out of, maybe look to upgrade to something with a buckle.
As for the position itself, yeah it’s not the most convenient for sex. It’s a great position if you just enjoy being restrained or for humiliation/degradation type kinks but it’s not particularly good for most impact play or more standard sex acts I’m afraid. I’d suggest looking into spreader bars especially ones that have a wrist attachment if you want to be more restrained or restraints that attached your wrists to your legs in front of you or look up frog tie
There’s nothing to say that @Calie hasn’t started perfectly.
The only addition I can make is to try the hogtie position face up and face down. It’ll add massively too the number of different things you can do. Just watch out for any tingling in extremities as some people experience nerve pinching in the hogtie position.

Firstly welcome to the club and it’s nice to hear you are getting into bondage.
I have seen the item you refer to and firstly it does not look the most comfortable to wear - but can appreciate that when used it’s more humiliating rather than practical
I have a similar set and we used it in the past where I would wear it and my husband would dominate me - as it forces you on your knees…
The Velcro is an easy material as under emergency situations you could easily get out - but if you are serious you can get better wrist and leg restraints which would then attach to the X .
In our relationship- I generally dominate over my husband and we use restraints that are under the bed and when used there is a strap at the 4 corners and this is a better and more comfortable way and ideal then for sex.
I hope this does not put you off - if you are not happy you may be able to still return it … regards 
She hog ties me in the kneeling position with my hands behind my back linked to my ankles. That exposes my genitals so that she can basically do whatever she wants to me. She also orders me to lick her to orgasm while hogtied.
I don’t think that they are very suitable for penetrative sex but they are great for other bondage activities.
Some velcro fastenings are not the most secure so try proper buckled cuffs instead.
Everyone above has said everything I was going to (and more). We don’t really use our hogtie as it unfortunately just gets in the way.
All I’m commenting to add is that, if you’re both into it, it allows for very dominating/submissive control over the mouth for oral. It’s still really uncomfortable as the wearer will need to be on their side etc, but it’s something to try if you didn’t want to relegate it to the bottom of the wardrobe just yet.
We too bought the hogtie set but the cuffs now get used with our under the bed restraints as the hogtie put a lof of pressure on my back (spina bifida). I can get out of velcro if I want to, but my husband/Dom plays me clever and he plays me psychologically: “do you want to escape?”. Well the answer to that is no, I want to be bound. So if I don’t want to escape, why try and escape?
One little trick to try: put the velcro fastening at the back/outside of your wrist. It’s a lot harder to grip and tug the velcro free if it’s out of the way 
Rope or a spreader bar could be what your looking for.
