Opinion on what you all think of this idea. Wife and I live in a good size house in the states. But we are empty nesters and the house is way too big for two people and we are selling it and moving to a smaller house in the fall. It will have a finished basement with its own bedroom and bath.
Here is the situation that I would like your opinion. Char’s lease is due around the time we are moving, rent is very high where we live and she is having a hard time finding a place that is reasonably affordable for a single person and does not want to be house poor. Wife and I were thinking of asking if she would want to rent our downstairs even if it’s temporary. We all get along very well. Though the sex is good between the three of us, we don’t want this to be the focus on the why of living downstairs.

I would be very dubious as to her motives with her involvement with you in the first place…did she know all this before she got involved? It could have been her trying to get in the door so to speak…
Personally I would be very careful. It’s ok having a third person involved in a sexual relationship that is coming to your property on your terms and invitation. But once she’s moved in and lived with you for so long she could possibly claim you are all in a relationship together and be entitled to a share in the estate.
I would be very wary…but I am an over thinker.

To clarify, she and my wife have been friends for over twenty years. She knows we are moving and she has never brought up the possibility of moving in with us, this was my wife and I talking. At this point she isn’t even aware we have discussed this, and really we may be a head of ourselves and think this is something she may consider when in reality it isn’t.
