My mother has been a smoker for 20 years and she successfully managed to quit smoking a few years ago using a medicine called Champix, (that's its name in France, I don't know if it's called the same in the UK). It worked perfectly for her and she never started again. It's not for everyone, though, you need to see a doctor if you want to use it.
I tried Champix too but it didn't work for me, when I tried using patched I 'bought' my patch each morning by putting the cost of a packet of fags in a jar, added up really quickly!
