Sex Toy Glossary - wiki draft

Nah, i expected some fiddling. On that note, there is a rogue bracket on the glass dildo thing that i cant for the life of me get shot of. Its bugging me but nothing i does fixes it :frowning:

Edit: Its fine, i worked out where i was screwing up :+1:

Posted a dummy wiki entry in the sandox so anyone can have a bash at altering the entries

Entries the wiki seems to be missing include;

  • Knicker/panty vibrators
  • remote/app vibrators
  • alot of the bondage stuff, like spreader bars.
  • strapless strapons
  • metal dildos
  • penis vibrators

I’m sorry to say this but I can see why Lovehoney deleted this from the shopping site. There is a fair few inaccuracies, missing things, some odd choices and the language is far from inclusive in places.

I think the idea of having a glossary on the forum is a brilliant one but maybe we need to start from scratch? Maybe have 2 lists, one for sex toys and one for kink toys (maybe with a few toys featuring on both sides as there are a few that would fit both lists). The sex toy one could also have a materials list/explainer/glossary as the last post on it rather than including them in main part of the glossary.

Agreed. I havent read many of the entries, but the ones i have need rewriting.
Materials list would be a fab inclusion

Personally I’d find it easier to edit what was there than start from a blank sheet. I’m not sure how popular this idea is going to be, and creating one from scratch seems like a lot of work - so I’m hedging my bets a little. :slightly_smiling_face: But this is just a draft at this point, so there’s plenty of room to try different ideas out. :slightly_smiling_face:

It’s fully editable though, so you can jump in and change any that are really bugging you. Or jot a few down in a post for other people to join in with. :+1:

Can you give some examples of the language you’d change, and what you’d change it to, so people can get an idea of how to phrase any new stuff/rewrites? And any missing entries, etc too. :+1:

I noticed anything remotely connected to strap ons needs rewording.

The Beginners Guide to Bondage is an A-Z, if that gives anyone inspiration?

And the Sex Toy one has a few examples in.

Normally I would agree that it makes sense to work with what’s there but I was trying to be diplomatic.

Some examples:

  • should be luke warm water
  • no need to reference partner
  • not a must have product (some like, some don’t but not an essential)

Bondage candles and massage candles are not the same thing, yet they are both mentioned here.

Bondage rope is not necessarily smooth and soft.

  • Butt plugs aren’t always tapered
  • Any gender can wear (not just men and women)
  • sex doesn’t necessarily equal PiV
  • tightness comment - technically no, just presses against the wall, so doesn’t tighten vagina as such. Horrible stereotype that vaginas have to be super tight and the last sentence can sod right off.
  • Too generic. Clitoral vibes covers far more than this entry indicates. They might often be small and inexpensive but can also be big and very expensive.
  • no toy is an essential (not everyone has a clit, not everyone likes vibration, not everyone likes clit stimulation)
  • clit vibes aren’t always “extremely powerful” and just as many women won’t orgasm from strong vibrations.

Nope. Double ended vibrators and strapless straps on aren’t the same thing. You can get vibrators that have 2 vibrating parts, one for each partner to enjoy. Lovehoney (as far as I can remember right now), doesn’t sell them.

Gags have 3 entries where as speculums and sounds are in the same grouping under medical fetish (which in itself is not a toy)

Why only dildos? (I’m including this as this is the type of entry that’s likely to be left in because they are popular but it makes no sense to only single out dildos in terms of things that can be made from glass)

Personal feelings about it’s inclusion aside (and also see glass dildo comment).

There is no evidence using a condom will do anything to protect the user and as most condoms are coated in silicone lube, it’s likely to damage the toy.

Theses days, most types of toys have some form of remote or app version so they aren’t usually known as knicker vibes nor are they usually egg shaped.

Again, see glass dildos. Silicone toys do not have to be stored separately.

Strap ons aren’t just worn by women.

In a bdsm context, a riding crop wouldn’t really be considered as a whip. Those who are new to bdsm might be in for a bit of a shock if they asked someone more experienced to whip them if they went on this entry.

There are other issues and not great entries but you get the point. Generally though, it’s all written through a cishet couples lens (other than a couple of mentions of lesbians in the multiple strap on sections).

I Agree. I feel many (if not possibly all) of the entry’s need complete overhaul, not least to to give them more inclusive language.
As far as i can see, its roughly structured around the sections in the shop. Not ideal, for example in this context pebble vibes would be under clit vibes and You can use them for many things besides the clit.

I think we need to ask if its going to be more work to scrub it, make a template and start from scratch. Or heavily edit what we’ve got here.

Just for ease. Ive made a draft template for everyone. (Hopefully correctly). Thought it might save some time.

Entry Title

[Image here](Product Link here)

Text for entry here

Category: [applicable shop section](correlating adress)
Read: [applicable guide](web address for guide)

That may not be the final format we choose. It’s only the inherited one from the copy and paste. :slightly_smiling_face: Though having each entry title as a header (whatever the size) is important, as then you get section links that can be grabbed and shared.

I think it’s a case of taking each entry at a time. You can create it from blank if you prefer, or you can use the existing text as a road map of does and don’ts and amend accordingly.

I think a list of general tips/pointers may be useful as well, so people can get a feel for what would be a ‘good’ entry (whether redrafting, or creating from scratch). Inclusive language, paragraph length, etc.

It may also be useful to copy and paste some of the updated descriptions from the other guides into the entries as a shortcut/time-saver.

I can go through and have a hack at them (at least to make the language more inclusive if all else fails). But im hesitant to touch anything like the penis toys or bondage as i don’t know enough about them to be confident I’m writing something accurate.

If you’re looking for some direction to get going you could start with the list of notes @Calie made? Alternatively, you could pick your favourite/most familiar entry and perfect that?

Some less interesting to-dos:

  • Update pictures (and centre?)
  • Check links are current
  • Check current guides for usable excerpts

How about adding a forum search to the bullet points? Would that be useful?

And how do people feel about the ‘Start with’ bullet point? It seems a bit odd to me, as I wouldn’t say there’s ever one definite example to buy.

We could move a link to the shopping section to there instead: (with a little alternative formatting thrown in :slightly_smiling_face:)

Category: Penis Pumps
More Info: Beginner’s Guide to Penis Pumps
Forum Search: Penis Pump

i like the suggested alternative format. i suppose it depends whether we want to include a recommendation/s in here or not. but like you said, one size does not fit all toy wise. different people want or need different things

Bumping so i can find it

You could bookmark it? If you open the menu at the bottom of a post there’s a star icon you can tap on. Or you can use the Topic Controls at the bottom of the topic.

You can even pin your favourite/most useful bookmarks to the top of your list too. :+1: (from your Bookmarks page)

Huh. Thanks @Ian_Chimp

Btw (while your here) does “waterproof toys” really need its own entry? Seems out of place if you ask me

I was thinking about this the other day. I was mulling over changing that to a description of what ‘waterproof’ actually means in the context of electrical items/sex toys.

So, waterproof is something like ‘1m deep for no more than 30 minutes’ (I’d have to look it up again, but you get the gist :slightly_smiling_face:).

Maybe that would make it a more relevant entry? And link it to a splashproof one too?

Agreed. People do find the language perplexing sometimes. Splashproof is always something that people look up

Ps. I hacked the “whip” entry into some sort of less horrible shape. Someone with more bdsm experiance will need to check it though. I did read up on it in a kink dictionary so hopefully it is okish
