Sex toys maintenance - silicone, PVC & others?

Many posts pertaining to cleaning up our toys. 2 areas I find it difficult maintain. 1) Silicone ones that become sticky. 2) PVC ones eroding and smell emerging. 3) Moving parts in dildos could not squirm smoothly. How to you maintain them especially the moving parts?

We don't own any PC but we like to keep on top of our silicone toy maintenance. After a year and a half we haven't experienced any stickiness or failures yet (touch wood). We wash our toys in warm soapy water after use and allow them to dry fully before storing them. We also charge and run our rechargable toys once a month. First Saturday of the month is our standard toy maintenance day. It helps if you have lots of toys to keep those forgotten or neglected toys running.

There is a tread for helping keep your rechargable toys going https://www.lovehoney.co.uk/community/forums/sex-toys/1752968-first-saturday-of-the-month/

Amazing that yours doesn't show stickiness.

I find the silicone ones get sticky quickly if left for a week unused. Perhaps it only happened in a humid country. I have been using "maintenance" powder to cover them after wash. Same that goes with my PVC toys. But one agonizing area is the moving part in the dildo. The beads are not moving and the rod is not moving/turning as it should. I can't reach out the area to oil it and it's frustrating. The problem doesn't seen in a single dildo but most after sometime unused.

Anyone has the experience to overcome this problem kindly let me know please.

We don't get sticky silicone either. Some silicone lubes can degrade silicone toys with repeat exposure (though not all. A lot depends on their different 'recipes') but you can make extra sure by only using water or oil-based lubes with them, or by doing a patch test on an unimportant section first to see if the silicone toy and silicone lube are compatible.

Toys should also be stored separately in their own little bags, especially if you have toys of different materials in there like jelly or TPE/TPR as these can react and become a melted dildo horrorshow. It's becoming increasingly rare that silicone toys will react to each other but it's prudent to store those separately too even if it's just for hygiene purposes.

If it's a case of humidity then silica pouches in the bottom of your toy box can help reduce ambient moisture. Cornflour may also be good to sprinkle on your toys as an added extra, but I'm not 100% sure about how useful that is for silicone as it's more for porous toys.

As for the toys with moving parts, it's a good idea to give them a regular workout even if it's just a 5 minute bazz once a month as it helps prevent them from seizing up. If they've already seized up I've had some luck giving them a thwack into the palm of my hand to see if that frees them up. It's not a sure thing though. You do have a year's warranty on all Lovehoney purchases but that may not be any use to you if you're living abroad as the postage may not be cost effective.

Hope these help. 🙂

And condoms can have an effect too depending which ones you use. If you do use condoms with your silicone toys then I've read it's best to use unlubricated ones (and add your own lube) as regular ones can often have silicone lube in which may react with the toy.

Grateful for all the replies and recommendations. Sometimes the problem lies with too many toys. Some you use often while others were neglected altogether. Thanks.

Good quality silicone toys seem to be totally ageless. We have some (e.g. an original Tantus Feeldoe) that are 20 years old and have been used with good quality silicone lube (e.g.Pjur) over that time with no ill effects. Silicone tends to be a bit of a lint-magnet so can be dusty if not stored in some lint-free, dust-proof bag but they are like that from day one and never seem to change. A quick rinse off with a little hand wash removes the lint easily.
