Yep, sex toys are illegal in Dubai, and I would think you were pretty lucky not to get arrested. Make sure you do the proper research when you travel abroad. When I go abroad I never take expensive toys just in case my luggage goes missing or anything gets damaged. Just make sure to take a few small items, and check the laws.
Your travel insurance will probably be able to help you out, you should get in contact with them.
I'd respect that I had broken a rule and wouldn't persue it any further. Can understand you being upset by the ordeal, but I'd just chalk it up as a lesson learned and look forward to buying new toys.
Sorry this happened to you, but definitely count yourself lucky. Knowing how strict they are about sex it was definitely a risk for you to take them. I think the rule you need to apply is if you don’t have a firm yes assume it’s a no. I’d be very interested to see what your travel insurance says.

Some years back I was distributing condoms and to my supprise found that I couldn't send them to the USA. When I questioned a customs official they told me that they were on the 'Prohibited List' along with whisky and feather quilts!! and any infringement would incure a fine of $800 per item for 'Promoting lewd and lacivious behaiviour' I thought that that was a bit rich from a Nation that was the capital of the Porn Industry! Some States there don't allow phallic shaped toys, thats why you see 'dolphin' and other weird shaped toys.
If in doubt leave them at home, at least you'll still have your freedom to come home and enjoy them.

On a more serious note check the rules of the country you are going on holiday, stuff you may do routinely or only get a slapped wrist for in some places may get you in serious trouble, sex on the beach in Dubai isn't advised.

Stick to Europe and the States say I - some Middle Eastern countries have some very strict rules when it comes to even Public Displays of Affection - my girlfriend and I would be arrested within moments of arrival ha ha!

Yes, it's amazing how much we take for granted here like being able to use things like sex toys and girls being allowed to dress how they like without wearing something to cover their hair 24/7. Sorry, I have many friends who are Muslims and I don't have a problem with them but for a country to take your property and destroy it when all you have done is committed the major crime of bringing it into their country... that's disgraceful.
Luckily, no Middle Eastern country is on my list of places where I'd like to travel one day.
