It's in the nature of things that almost ewverytrhing will offend somebody. However, avoiding Tranny, Shemale and other similar terms and, to be honest, just using Trans or Transgender if you're not sure is probably the safest way to go.
I'm somewhere on the scale between fully male and fully female, just past crossdresser and not all the way to transsexual (I think, as of now). I don't mind being calle Tranny, but then I've been called a lot in my time and if I lost sleep over it I'd be extremely tired by now.
If you are genuinely interested in people as people, rather than a particular assemblage of sexual and gender characteristics, and it shows, then you won't offend any but the most determinedly awkward buggers around.
The thing that I notice most is when people asume you're gay if you wear different clothes to the norm. Sloppy thinking and casual sexism in my book. I don't really believe in 'gay' anyway, more a general sexual nature to people that varies between us all.
