not done much rope play myself, knots were never my strong point, much easier to shackle some cuffs on.
However, I did see a rope demo once where a guy made a corset entirely out of rope, he used different colours to achieve patterning down the front of it - looked absolutely fabulous, although took about an 2 hours to do.
His ropes looked like climbing rope, but felt a lot softer to the touch. I'm assuming they'd also have specific properties to stop them expanding/contracting after they'd been tied. Do a google on bondage rope - I'm sure you'll find the right product...
I am looking to do a little of this too, a fetish club I go to has an experienced instructor who uses climbing rope - you can get rather pretty colours and UV glow ropes. Hemp rope can be used too but watch the coarseness - unless you like that ;) Don't use that plastic rope though as it cuts into skin and also keep a sharp knife at hand in case a quick release is needed (fainting etc...)

I've tried the silk (purple - oooooh so pretty) japanese bonadge rope that you can get already tied into cuffs or in one long length and it's gorgeously soft I love it! Just a recommendation ;) My partner and I have not been to any classes yet although someone did tell us that there are free demonstrations at the Birmingham fetish fair - we'll check it out and let you know here :) Or if anyone knows of a good book to try please let us know :D Thanks

we bought just a regular knot book and have found it very good. The only thing is of course that it doesn't suggest ways of tying someone up. Can have fun trying new things though!
I was told by a Dom friend of mine that soft cotton rope, also known as magictians (sp?) rope is best. I got some and it is great. Not scratchy or chafeing, and also has a little 'give' In. there is a great website found on ebay that sells the stuff called bound to please.
Got a great book on amazon by the knotty boys (brothers?! its late lol) that i would recomend
