Silicone Butt Plugs w/Plastic Jewels: What's The Best Way To Keep Them From Stinking?

Hi there everyone,

So I just became the very happy and satisfied owner of the Jewelled Butt Plug Set (Three Piece) by Rianne S, which I bought here on Lovehoney.co.uk, and which you can view for yourself on the site at: http://www.lovehoney.co.uk/product.cfm?p=35663

I have never used butt plugs before and I would call myself new to anal play in general - but not because I've never engaged it. It's just that it's been well over ten years now. The butt plug part of the experience is new to me though, however. And the reason for the ten year break is due to two things... Firstly, eleven years ago now I was assaulted in said location by an evil deviant entirely against my will, and yes, this was reported to my local jurisdiction's police department and prosecutor (I'm an American if these terms are different sounding). Secondly, I had a bowel blockage six years ago now that required a surgical removal of the mess, but fortunately it was able to be done without cutting open my side or needing a colostomy bag. I was just anesthetized and then the removal was all able to be done by removal through the anal canal using a laproscopic camera. It left some tearing, fissures, and needed some stitches, and I was told not to be involved with any sort of sexual anal play for at least a year and then to get an examination first before proceeding.

So long story short, I had an exam done, took the product in prior to use and was given the two thumbs up to go ahead :D

For anyone new to this by the way, let me just say now that using KJ Warming Jelly is a BAD idea! Lol. Don't know what I was thinking, but yeah, don't go that route as it will sting like fire along all the sensitive anal nerve endings - and this didn't have to do with any tearing, scabbing or scarring related to my personal case because I was told that everything is 100% healed now. So in preparation by the way, I did decide to use an enema bag, but only filled it about a quarter of the way as I didn't want to bloat myself or get to looking nine months pregnant, lol, and prior to having had that intestinal blockage, I have become very familiar with everything from coffee, saline and mineral oil enemas, to water enemas, so doing a 1/4 bag of a rather large bag using just 98.6F degree water (which is the human body temperature that's considered the norm - I apologize for not knowing it in Celsius). And then afterward I used plenty of lubricant inside the body, outside the body, and on the plug and there were no issues inserting it at all.

Getting on now to my specific question...

I have had the smallest one in for awhile now and was feeling comfortably ready to try the next size up. This time I didn't use any water-based lubes that had any intended sensations with them either by the way, lol... MUCH better! (i.e. no KY Warming Jelly - which was water based though I shoud add). This time I used Blossom Organics Natural Moisturizing Lubricant, which is water based and has a main ingredient of Aloe Vera. Anyway, after removing the other one, it didn't smell too nice. I assumed this would be the case, however after scrubbing it with hot water using several types of soap, and then spraying it down with Lelo's Antibacterial Cleaning Spray - first a rub down, and then second time around drenching it and then just letting it sit and air dry, (it's meant to used this way and with the intent of using it on silicone, too), it's still got a funky smell. I left it out to air dry, so hopefully that will help. But does anyone know any solutions for this?

I do have the Lovehoney toy cleaning spray (the kind that's like a spray-on soap that you have to rinse off afterward), but I haven't tried this yet. Would that solve this? And if not, what about boiling? I have been using a Diva Cup for years for my menstrual flow which is a silicone cup worn internally that's meant to be used over and over again the packaged instructions say that if it ever develops any kind of funky smell, to go ahead and boil it in hot water. So I'm assuming this fine for the silicone part, but what about the plastic jewel?

If this just ends up being the nature of butt plugs, would a metal version instead cure the issue? I love Rianne's sizes and styles, and she has a version that is made from metal with a 24K coating to get rid of any worries or considerations concerning metal allergies, but do glass and metal pieces also get stinky in this same way? And even so, how can I get the smell off my brand new set here?

Thank you everyone!
(And I will certainly be writing a five star review of this product regardless by the way... I can't wait to try out the largest one here after the next few hours go by)!

Hi Natalie! Welcome to the forums and I hope you are happy here so far!

Firstly I am sorry to hear some of the troubles you have had in life and I do hope that you are happy and healthy now.

In regards to the Rianne Set in particular I would not suggest boiling just due to the crystal. If you do want to give them a good in depth clean I would suggest some warm water, pour some toy cleaner in, and just wipe them over with a washing cloth. This should get rid of any unexpected smells as well as keeping them in perfect condition :)

You could also get a toy cleaner which has a smell to it such as this one below, as it smells like Tea Tree Oil:

I hope this helps!

I have this set.....really lovely isn't it :)

I use Lovehonsy flavoured water based lubes with them and have never had any issues with smell. I give them a good wash in antibacterial soap and then spritz with the Lovehoney toy cleaner, rinse and dry. I certainly wouldn't risk boiling them xx

(I have worn the larger one for 12 hours plus but the above method seems to keep everything clean and sweet smelling) xx

Hi 🤗

I've had issues with butt plugs smelling a little, no matter how much I clean them after use. However the smell doesn't last too long, thankfully. Just continue with what you're doing.

I have more than one metal plug and they definitely do not smell.

Honestly, silicone and bottoms will smell when used in combo. I find that a satin bag (available on LH) stops the smell spreading too far, so you can leave the toy on your bedside without sniffing it all night).

Seriously look at metal and glass toys. These do not have a prolonged smell, look (and feel) amazing and are easy to clean.

Reading your question - if you are sensitive down there - don't use perfumed or other chemical lubes (ie heating). I have reviewed A LOT of lubes - so look at my account. metal/glass toys can be "warmed up" or "cooled down" by putting in a mug of hot water or ice. With hot, make sure its not too hot because explaining that down A&E can be awkward.

Don't use too much soap or shower gell or anything down there. Enema or douche with warm water, and I find that some E45 shower wash is a really good way to keep clean and moisterised (although can make shower floor look really dirty really quickly - so bathroom cleaning must be every couple of days not every week!)

Glass, Silicone and Stainless steel can all go through the dishwasher which is very good at cleaning them, however the plastic jewel might fall off or discolour, just don't let strangers fill/empty the dishwasher!
