The Gym

I’m glad you have recovered/recovering are you back to 100% yet?

Has the gym pre bowel helped you recover quicker?

Well said @MrGoodGuy!

I’ve not done any training for two weeks now (Christmas break and all) but I 100% agree with trying to keep the consistency going.

Back in March I made the decision to go for a 30 minute run or park based workout (using park benches as equipment works surprisingly well) and I’ve kept that up, so much so I’m the ‘running man’ at work

I tried out doing 100 push ups a day for all of October, and I can definitely say that it got easier, and my arms, shoulders and chest were looking much more defined so I kept that up too.

I’m training for a half marathon later in the year and I’m aiming to get a personal best of below 1hr 45mins which is great motivation for me.

I do indoor rowing to stay in shape and mix that with dumbbell or body weight exercises. Some days I will just row for 20-45 minutes, other days I will use the indoor rower as part of a strength routine. When the weather is nice we walk and do a lot of hiking. We live at the base of the Rocky Mountains in the US so privy to a quite a few good hiking trails.

Hi
I was told to leave gym til Jan, but I thought it was too long, and just took it easy, going thru the motions with light weights

I’ve probably lost 30 % strength, I was benching 60kg dumbells and im back down to 40kg ish, probably a bit heavier, but early days.

Think if you have a good lvl health it aids recovery.
I’ve never ever had a cold, I’m probably the cure lol, but keeping it to myself :joy:

Hardly ever Ill, was wondering if I was the real Bruce Willis in broken, as I’ve had crashes and serious shit and don’t get a scratch.
Asked my wife and my mum about being ill, and they cudn remember or recall

I’ve had food poisoning and bowel perforation, but I’m never ill like general colds, flu, covid, eyc
Just lucky I guess

Think it stands to reason that your body copes better if your fitness is better, especially as you get older

Respect for doing the training for half marathons, running to the fridge or the toilet is my limit :joy:

I’ve read good and bad things about the 100 push up thing

Suppose u don’t want the bulk running that distance, more endurance training, rowing always appealled to me, but after 20 mins, I found it boring, even with music.

I’ve heard people say about being in the flow with running and swimming, personally it’s eluded me.
Tried cycling with a decent bike, but soooo boring, each to their own if you enjoy it, which millions do.

I used to lift big weights (still do I suppose) Def ego, especially if women watched me lift 2 or 3 times every one else in the weights area, laughable now .

Then I realised when I’m naked on nudist areas, or in shorts, no one knows what u bench (155kg x 5 reps pb)
No one says what so you bench dude, like in the movies :joy:.
But they do see what u look like.
Bet your quite lean doing running, Ive got to 15% body fat, and realised at 57 I’m not gonna be Arnie, so what is achievable?

Being lean, ripped and healthy

Make your goal achievable, when you’ve hit it, move the goal posts - baby steps

All about breaking it down into sizeable chunks

So today was day 2 of 2025 gym life and I went back to the gym just feeling a little bit of todays work not resting easy on my knee, lots of landscape digging today of frozen ground.

Did a 500 calorie cross trainer workout and 100 reps for each major muscle group. At 20kg for most of it.

I kept this in my mind today as I do most times I’m working out.

I use to be the guy doing 170 to 250kg but why knacker my body for stupidity. I still work with weight in excess of that at work but I work smarter not harder. At least I tell myself that. So tomorrow depending on commitments I will be back at the gym or I will do a workout at home to exercise the abs mostly.

Thank you for this post, I could do with some motivation myself.

I don’t go to gyms, but I love walking, especially forest walks and some hiking. I love being within the mountains, just not necessarily up them all the time  but, me and my sister are doing Snowdon at the start of May. Almost 2 yrs after doing Ben Nevis, our goal is the highest peaks in the 4 countries and Ireland and we’ve not been actively persuing that.

The problem for me is that I live in Ireland where its pissing it down a lot, and before anyone pipes up to say I love pissing, yes I do, but not the same type lol. So when the rain is bouncing, I’m not going out there, so I need to get my walking pad out of its hiding spot and use it again. But for now, I’m away out for a walk, in the rain lol

Morning @JoCat

Hope you have a good walk and the rain eases, I’m going to get into a pissing contest with you for the fun of it and say Scotland beat Ireland for rain, in intensity, frequency, length and direction as it can literally bounce of the floor.

I love the fact we can be out of our houses and in woods for walks within 5 minutes if not living in densely populated areas.

I love your goal of the 5 nations, 5 hills. Keep going and here to motivate if you need it.

I can feel that dull ache of well used muscles today, I know it will be there tomorrow so today I’m opting for home fitness and concentrating on my core.

You’re welcome to take all of the rain if it makes you feel better :stuck_out_tongue: We do need some to keep Ireland green, but I’m ok with Scotland beating Ireland.

Todays walk wasn’t too bad, the wind whipped my cheeks but it was good getting out and the weather kept a lot of people indoors.

Went for a lunchtime run (with some walking) with a colleague.
Tomorrow it’s the outdoor gym, going to wrap up warm for that!

@TPete we need to put our photos in

I’d appreciate yours and @MrGoodGuy’s input! I didn’t go to the gym on Tuesday as all muscle groups had a good way of reminding me I’d done a work out. But I did an abs and core work out at home. I still had some of the same feeling today but couldn’t get to the gym as we it was Christmas decoration removal from it’s months display. And will be doing ans and core before bed.

Do you push each day or 1 day on 1 day off.

I will be back in tomorrow, I was just curious of your schedule.

Good idea re images

My work pattern governs my gym schedule

So I have to juxtapose it against my free time, which I imagine is most peoples lives.

I do nights every 2 weeks, so I don’t train on my first day off, having little to no sleep doesn’t make good training.

I do an old fashioned “Bro Split” so chest & Tri’s one day, shoulders the next, back & biceps then legs, back to work for recovery time.

Ideally training of such muscles as pecs should be done twice a week, but not full on, so you’re not too sore or tired.
My shifts wudn make that easy, and I tend to go for it in the gym, and I’d just get sore, thinking that’s a good workout.

(Altho muscle soreness can feel like you’ve done something, it doesn’t always equate to gains.)

Some people write numbers in a diary to show progress, and science says that works.
But my strength and energy differ on my mood, diet, and enthusiasm - so I lift what I lift on the day, think it keeps my muscles guessing too.

The hardest part can be getting up and going, and when I’m in there it can be so so easy just to pull a easy one and go home, especially leg day.
That’s when you gotta have a word with yourself, get some good tunes going and push hard.
But don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t.

I also play with pyramid training, matrix training and down the rack.
Varying it up with a good sized weight, but going real slow and only a few reps.

I was doing callesthenics until I was Ill, so an hr in the gym and an hr callesthenics.
Particularly proud of myself being able to do “Skin the cat” at 57 :cat:.
Back on it soon once I’m recovered.
Callesthenics is something I’d recommend if you can do it, start slow and leave it there, progressing at your own speed and capabilities.
Look up “ThenX” a YouTuber, he breaks it down, and is crazy good at it.
You’d be Suprised at the strength, balance and stamina needed.
I can press and lift BIG numbers, but became a Pre - pubescent 12 Yr old school girl when it comes to doing callesthenics :joy:
(I have my age as a convenient excuse!)

Any gym routine can get boring, so pulling something like callesthenics in gives it a boost, and smashing a heavy hour on weights, then doing an hour callesthenics can make you feel totally knackered, but going home knowing how well you did, and how I’m not going to the retirement home just yet.

Gives me stamina in the bedroom too :+1:
Can go for ages! (my pb is fast approaching 3 mins (including foreplay ))
Bet your all jealous now :joy::joy::joy::rofl:

I was always a hard working kid and played sports in high School . About right after graduation I found out I had exploded three disks in (our) football . They wished to do surgery , however a friend had been in a car accident and they had done the same procedure on him . He was paralyzed from chest down . I opted out of it . So I went to work in the gym to build my erector muscles and the whole body joined in . At my peak I was 6% body fat and 198 pounds at 5’ 8" . Worked out for almost 6 years . I did 5 days a week and weekends off , average gym time was 2.5 - 3 hours . On weekends I usually dirt biked and or scuba diving . Whole body pretty well wore out and with caring for my wife , I have almost zero time to work out . When I was laid off from my machinist job , I removed problem trees and also cut firewood to hang onto my house . My dream is to get in fair shape by the time I turn 70 . I always loved free weight , the clang of the steel plates . Too many people these days get almost zero exercise and little physical labor , along with often a not so good diet . My motorcycles do help keep me in a little better shape . There is an Australian guy on YouTube that has a great video on riding . Search " Why we ride after 50 " . I especially like when he says " Everybody comes into this world bloody and screaming , aggressively riding adventure bikes increases the chance of going out the same way " .

If you gym peeps are buying protein bars, that aren’t cheap and probably full of sugar, here’s a recipe for a delicious alternative that costs about £10 for 22 bars.

Ingredients

6/8 + scoops of protein powder (I use 9)
Jar of coconut oil
Packet of walnuts
Packet of cranberries /raisin mix
2 bars dark chocolate
1 1/2 - 2 pint jug of muesli

I buy all my ingredients apart from the protein powder, from Lidl.
You can use dark cooking choc if you want

Method
Put dry ingredients into mixing bowl and mix
Meanwhile melt coconut oil in the jar in a microwave for about 1 min
Add the coconut oil to the mixer, until it’s mixed in.
If the mixture is really wet, add more muesli, but you don’t want it too dry, as it falls apart when you cut it.

I’ve found the protein powder binds it all together really well.
Bodybuilding Warehouse is a good source to buy powder, and do some great discounts if you go on their mailing list.

Melt broken choc in microwave, 1 min at a time, stirring so it doesn’t burn

Line a good size tin with greaseproof paper, and pour mixture in, and press down with a spoon and a rolling pin

Pour over choc and spread out

Put in fridge for a few hrs, remove and cut into squares

This takes me 15 mins ish to make, leave it in the fridge in a plastic box, and eat when you want.

I calculated it about 250 300 calories per bar

But about 15g of protein

Mix it up with granola if you want, or different nuts, what ever you fancy

Peanut butter works well too

As does different flavors of protein powder, I love salted caramel or cookie dough.

Only issue I have is cutting them up, I use a plastic chopping board as a straight edge with a knife, I should use a tin with squares really

I’ve worked on this recipe for ages and my friends are always stealing the bars, as they are soooo nice, much better than anything you’ll buy off a shelf

Give it a go, it’s super easy, tasty and so much cheaper

Perhaps give some feedback, and what your adding in, cud do with some different ideas?

When I had to end my extreme body building was when I got laid off , no way I could afford all the quality food I consumed . Arnold Schwarzenegger and Franco Columbu were both my favorite motivators . A little window into their lives is a 77’ movie called pumping iron . And a bible to body building from Arnold is " New encyclopedia of modern bodybuilding . I do believe I learned more about diet and the human body from body building than all the medical classes I took as an Emergency Medical Tech .

No sir, having been distracted on Monday and not having a plan of attack, I decided to let this week go, get myself good and ready to go, and go again for next week. I have, however, been keeping up my exercises for my back - as immodest as opening and closing my legs may feel!
