I would recommend a card for your mother it might go down better especially if it’s a card with a cute cat or dog on the front.
I was contemplating a cake topper with “65… OMG, ancient” on it maybe. Then it’s on the cake without ruining the whole cake.

@Wood-Nymph @MsSubExperimenter my boy has been sprawled out in front of the tower fan all day. I can call him and I just get that look like “do you seriously think I’m moving for you?”
He’s broken-coated, so he’s really been feeling the heat bless him.
Krav Maga is a tough martial art, but it is an excellent form for the streets… not that I’m out fighting every Saturday night! But trying to have the confidence in one’s own ability to defend themselves is something I do work on. You just never know what might happen. Being a tall-ish, broad man, I was always a target for smaller chaps who’d had a few too many and wanted a go at a big fella… luckily I can be pretty witty on occasion, so could usually diffuse any potential scrapes…
You’d fit in perfectly at an LRP event! They’re so welcoming and open, especially to folk who’ve never been to one before. And as for using guns, there are a variety of genres which allow them, so your witty adventurer could fit in futuristic, Mad Max style event, a Steampunk one, Western themed ones happen often, even once did a Sharpe’s Rifle/Jane Austen crossover, lots of pistols in garters then! It’s not all “fantasy” based…
Yes, my dad was very lucky. He knew it as soon as he stepped out of the water.
I know of Clevedon Pier, but never been. Got a few friends in Bristol and the area… I’m in Greater London, so don’t get over that way that much.
Sounds like a crazy scene to have watched. Again, you just never know what, or who, is going to happen. ![]()
One of my favourite local areas and I use to ask if I could just hop on if someone was just going through
@Hannahnim stomping grounds
Also trying not to clutter up the other topic
Also the canalrivertrust has volunteers for assisting people with disabilities use the locks and there are also tools too.
By the way, forgot to mention the forth and Clyde horse - I love that! Bet it must be amazing to see it for real.
Also – can you share with me which canals you walked down around here? X
@Long-John-Silver I flagged my comment and asked Brenna to move the boating conversation here ![]()
@KinkyMira . Just read " His eighteenth birthday present " and " Paying his debt "
Both had the stimulating effect that well written prose has on one, shall we say.!!
I’ve seen Betty and her boat Little One go past! You can tell she’s not one of the usual CC guys as her boat actually looks clean and tidy!
Ahh so you grew up local to the Leek branch that’s supposed to have the lowest tunnel on the network, have you been through it? I’m trying to keep up with your whereabouts you seem to have been here there and everywhere! We were very close to going up the Caldon Canal. It was a choice between that one and the Ashby and dad went with the Ashby in the end, but after seeing the scenery, Froghall and the choo choo train.. we regret it ![]()

It could be worse… Mum was 73 on the 12th and she’d had a nicely worded letter to expect a nice visit from the BBC inspector on that day! As per usual they didn’t turn up.
Those diary entries were quite spicy @Iwill and are stimulating. @KinkyMira does lead a life not many lead, it is inspiring to see that love and fun can live side by side.
I was one of the generation where once my chores were done and a lunchbox made up I was able to go where my feet took me. Or more accurately my bicycle, the 4 counties ring, Cheshire ring, Whaley Bridge and the Carlson & Leek.
As I grew up and had more freedom and money I was fortunate to travel the length and breadth of ![]()
Scilly Isles, Shetland, Belfast & Ireland, Wales and London extensively, Cornwall , and everything north. Now Scotland is base camp
You confused the flip out of me then! You said BCC and I was like “hold up, I didn’t know you were Bristolian too?!” ![]()
You have to love councils and there planning. My upstairs neighbour’s bathtub leaked a while ago and that caused a crack in our kitchen ceiling. So we had a repair job done, an extractor fan installed in our kitchen and a paint job. The electrician made a right bloody mess and the decorator said he could paint over the crack and the damage to the ceiling that the electrician caused. So I had a look after he’d gone and nope, you can see it all clear as day, it just glows with fresh white paint now! He managed to leave a lovely big streak up the kitchen doorway too, and a blob down my small black serving shelf by the cooker.
As always, if you want a job done properly, do it your bloody self! ![]()
Excuse me, as an avid reader of my work as well, you should know bloomin’ well by now that love and fun can exist side by side

I definitely have something to write about today too, I just haven’t got around to that yet

It is a fine read with a cuppa and a tasty treat on the side.
Oh nice!! So you have very likely passed here! We have a very popular cycling route opposite. I would love to share pictures and details where I live to you, @Stacy2 and a few other members as we have some lovely landmarks and things of interest which I’m sure might trigger your memory but I can’t. And I’m sure they’ll be every man and his dog looking at this forum so I don’t think that would be a good idea… especially with what I’ve been posting! I don’t think the rest of the family would be pleased about that!! so I’m thinking about them. If I can get any photos where it doesn’t give any clues, I will try.
My dads side of the family were absolutely crazy about walking so we were raised on walks. I remember being exhausted after driving all day to get on holiday. So dad gets out, stretches his legs and says ‘let’s go on a nice walk’!. 13 miles later! Done, but happy.
Next day – let’s go on a nice short walk as we’re all recovering from yesterday… 15 miles later! And so on. But we all really enjoyed it, can’t do it so much now but I still walk as much as I can, every day and I think it helps keep me sane as well as helping physically. And it is the best way to see and get a feel for an area, and see nature as well.
I think the confidence is key. I have what I’ve come to call the “FAFO doctrine” mentality; I don’t want to hurt anyone but I can and will defend myself if I have to. That’s not necessarily physically either. If someone attacks my reputation, there will be consequences for them.
That’s interesting to know! Thank you for sharing that with me. I remember seeing a LARPing event in the woods near my Mum’s house and I was so jealous because it looked so fun but I wouldn’t know the first thing about it. One of the guys did smile at me though because my husband reminded me of when we looked at the stately home for our wedding and the consierge kept pronouncing canapé as “canopies” and we had to keep a straight face while she talked, so then I started making jokes about how “in-tents” it was and how “I didn’t think you were that kind of guy (rope), to mock people like that.”
Clevedon pier is lovely, you get a real sense of the Victorian era it was built in when you walk it and there’s a real sense of a past time when MV Balmoral or PS Waverley docks at the end too — it’s on my bucket list to ride the Waverley. I’m in North Bristol so I know the area quite well, though I’m often often the bridge as I have family friends over there. I know London area quite well too; my grandfather was from Horsham but took us to London a few times, just so we could say we’d been. I have an ex from that way too.
Oh absoluely not, but then, I think that’s one of the best parts of life ![]()
