Hi guys,
I am wondering if anyone has had this?
After my chest infection, which also affected the nose, throat and poss ears too, I have noticed a ringing.. dull but certainly audible inside my ear. Its really annoying when i am trying to sleep but i do manage to get off to sleep eventually.
I have done a wikipedia search and found some useful info and i am taking antibiotics for the infection but its probably viral and not really helping to fight against the infection, at least it doesnt appear to be.
Just wondered if anyone had any ideas on next course of action.. should i just see if it goes away by itself?
Thx
To ask a stupid question have you seen the doctor regarding the tinitus? If it's not sound damage that's caused it it could be hard to help and I'd recommend medical attention asap.
I've had tinitus for about eight years now from damage done at gigs, it's horrible to live with the regular ringing and sharp pain during any loud/high noise. It's got slightly better over the years, but only through taking as much care of my ears as possible; avoiding loud gigs, wearing ear plugs/defenders during any noisy activity (within reason) and taking a lot of care when cleaning my ears.
Hope this is of some help and get well soon x

I wont have time today but will sort an appt tomorrow. Its not too loud at the moment and i have been able to sleep thank god. But i heard a news story of a guy who had enough of tinnitus and topped himself. I assume he must have had a severe case.
Thx for the advice. x
I'm not surpirsed, severe tinitus must be unbearable!
Hope it all goes well x
Yes - definitely one for the GP. There are all manner of causes and hopefully, since you haven't had it before, it should only be temporary. I have noticed that my tinnitus can get temporarily worse after colds etc. though in my case the root cause is familial and I have had it to a degree all my life (as a kid I wondered why quiet rooms had a high-pitched whistle). Luckily I have learned to live with it very happily.
Thx guys, i have an appt with my sexy doctor tomorrow. Only because of a cancellation. He really is like a Dr Kildare.. gorgeous.
I have a feeling i wont remember a word he tells me!!

Hi De. I had something similar a few years ago, immediately assumed it was tinnitus and panicked. It was just part of an ear infection as AA describes, ended up going to ENT but it got completely better. Enjoy your lovely doc, at least seeing him will cheer you up. And hope it gets sorted, I remember it was horrible when I had it. Especially as you need las much sleep as possible at the moment. Take care
Hi Sue, What is ENT?
I have been to the doctors, (he greeted me by saying `hello grandma'. Wasnt the most effective greeting i have to say lol) he has given me a prescription to reduce the swelling in the inner ear area, says that i should really be signed off sick from work as i used a headset at work and the volumes could irritate and make things worse as it already appears to just having only been back at work two days. He has written a note for me to take into work, requesting i only do admin work if poss, but he said he would have preferred too sign me off until it clears up- aww such a thoughtful doctor!!
hehe
There are two types of tinnitus sue, one that older people over 60 generally get due to athritus on the bone in the inner ear, and the tinnitus after an infection. I defintely have tinnitus but no ear infection .. which is good news.
Thanks peeps for your advice!!
D x
Hope it clears up soon. ENT - ear, nose and throat specialist / consultant.
All the best as I know it's really unpleasant.
As stated, ear nose and throat specialists. Ah, maybe I did have tinnitus then! Hope you take docs advice, you and your ears are more important than work. And no clubbing/gigs this weekend Dee ;)

I don't think this must be quite right as some people can have tinnitus all their lives and it can also be hereditary.
I have tinnitus thats I've suffered from for as long as I can remember, When I was very young ~(5 or 6) I used to go round turning the electricals off because I could hear high pitched static coming off them. Mine is due predominantly to my cronic sinus problems, they regularly become impacted and cause problems with migranes, eyesight, and my teeth as well as causing severe random stabbing pain in one or both ears. My dad, and paternal grandmother also have suffered from long term tinnitus. Neither of them have the sinus problems I do although my dad does have really bad allergies and also has worked in a ships engine room since he was 15 so has hearing loss. My Nana has hearing loss as well but then again she is 91.
In general I don't notice mine anymore unless it's really quiet or my sinuses are playing up. I do get some random looks when I comment oh my ears hurt I better get some sudafed. If it is playing up I have to have background noise to draw my attention off it and will go to sleep with the TV or radio turned on.
My apologies, yes there is a 3rd, usually due to a build up of fluid my doctor stated. Which is what i have as i didnt have an ear infection but due to the cold/chest infection i managed somehow to get tinnnitus. Youre right though it can happen at any time but its all related to your sinuses.
It must be awful to suffer with it throughout life.
I did hear a report in the news a few months ago of a guy who couldnt stand it any longer and doctors couldnt help so topped himself.
I dont have it that bad .. fortunately. I too can have music or something on it the background which dulls the noise.
The noise has changed though since thursday. Went from high pitched to dull buzzing now sounds like a plane.

I think it depends on your personality. Luckily I'm a 'half-full' rather than a 'half-empty' sort of character and, despite being an atheist, have a fairly Niebuhrian attitude to life. However, my father spent much of his life wound up over things he couldn't change and he really couldn't cope with his tinnitus. My mum, by contrast, who I suspect suffered every bit as much with it hardly ever mentioned it.
