Yes always metal, yes lube in sachets smooth can be good too once youve got the lube all the way in, i have a syringe that helps as i can slide the 12mm body of it all the way to the finger hoops .
Word of caution: I’ve tried the long flexible metal type with beads all along it. It feels great, but you can not clean it properly, and after a few months, it was clear parts were rusting! It was cheap from China

As @be3169 mentioned , clean , CLEAN and then clean some more . Also for any sounding , only use sterile lube ! And in the case of the estim , special conductive sterile lube .
