Recently the people above me have been very noisey, I don't really mean sexually I mean sociallly. Anyway recently I've been hearing a vibratory device go off and thought it was maybe one of my vibes playing up somewhere in my bedroom. A week later I realised that it is upstairs new mobil phone, it goes off often in the night for about 30sec-1min and then you hear a very loud phone conversation. I believe they have been keeping there phone of the floor next to there bed, hence why I can hear the vibrations so clearly.
Anyway I know sound travels differently from below, but it did get me thinking. I'm now wondering if they can hear my vibrators going off? Though there phone while on vibrate seems a lot louder and more annoying than some of my vibes, espically as it goes off throughout the night. Also how do I tell them that I can hear there phone go off and there conversations as they basically shout down the phone. I've not been sleeping well at all anyway because of them singing randomly throughout the night, and I know I should complain really but bringing up the phone vibrations as well might seem a bit far? Also they could throw back at me, well we can hear your vibratory devices too.
I'm a very tired, exstremely depressed, very emotional, and stressed person right now and need a good night sleep, and now it doesn't help that I am worrying/ paranoid about them hearing me masturbate with a vibrator... I don't think I would be worrying so much/ getting paranoid/ and really caring about it, if I just had a few good nights sleep. I've never gotten angry and upset about much before and have always been very relaxed as a person untill now.....
Also I do know the laws regarding tenancy, housing, and so on as I had to research them last year so I know what has to be done, but still finding the words without crying or shouting at someone can be hard.
Sorry that I've gone off topic a bit, just wondering if anyone else can hear things like vibrators and so on from people living next to them? I can understand in student places and places where the walls are thin, but my place is a purpose built flat with very thick walls :/
I have never head vibes from any neighbours. Sex, arguments, music, hoovers, yes. Vibes, no.
It sounds to me like the people above you are completely disrespectful, yes we all have noisy moments but if this is happening all the time then it needs to be sorted.
Try talking and reasoning with them, that what they are doing isn't respectful. If that fails, let them know the law and where you stand on reporting them, tell them you will report them if this carrys on.
If those fail, report them.
It is not worth being exhausted over rude and disrespectful people.
I just read your post and I think it might have solved a mystery for me too. Recently we have been hearing a vibrating noise every so often and I have also hunted high and low in my flat for the culprit. My OH is convinced its coming from the guy upstairs and I am now wondering if it is his mobile phone on his wooden floors.
I unfortunatley suffer the same thing with our noisy neighbours but received some good news that he is finally moving on after all the complaints I have made. Our neighbour isnt the type you can reason with but our complaints have been logged and seems we finally have some satisfaction yipeeeeeeee!
I do hope you find a solution to your problem nymphomaniac, because I too went through the sleepless nights etc. On your other question though apart from the mysterious buzzing I have never heard any other vibration noises from above (or below when I lived in the middle).
I know that some of my vibes can be heard downstairs if they are on slightly higher settings and I'm in contact with the bed.
As for the people above you hearing, it's really not likely. The vibrations you hear are when something is transferring vibration directly to a hard surface like a floor. In order for then to hear your vibrations, you'd have to have them very loud, or hold the vibe against your ceiling/upper walls.
I wouldn't worry about this The Nymphomaniac, here's why:
You seem to be hearing the sound of the mobile rattling on a hard floor. So the main noise may not be from the vibrating component, but actually from the phone's body rattling against the hard floor. Even if you are hearing the vibrating device, it's very different to how the sound from the vibrator in your toys would sound to someone. The phone is on the floor, and the sound is travelling through the solid floorboard, through some small space, then through your supports and ceiling. Hard things conduct sound well so that might be why you're hearing so much.
Now, let's think about you using your toys (if you don't mind me doing this ). The noise/energy from the vibe isn't going to be rattling anything (I hope!), it's going to be absorbed by your body, or if the vibe was lying next to you it'll be absorbed by your mattress, duvet, bed etc. With all this soft stuff soaking up the noise of an already pretty quiet noise, and then all that air between your bed, your ceiling, and the neighbour's floor and ears I'd say it was very unlikely that they'd hear anything!
I've got a science degree but not in physics/music tech - I'm sure someone can provide a much better example and involve frequencies and all sorts of more techy stuff - but I think my explanation should be mostly correct!
Overall, don't worry about them hearing, and to block out their noise maybe write a nice note, or buy some silicone earplugs - I used them all through uni houseshares and they're very effective and really help me sleep!
my neighbors have definately heard me have sex. and probably use vibrators too. there is a fire escape in our bedroom and people can stand outside so there is a possibility our neighbor (who hates our guts) has stood and listened
If I disliked someone the last thing I would want to do is hear them having sex!
Thanks every, I think I was mainly worrying because I'm so tired. I decided to go to bed at 7pm yesterday just because I felt I needed too..... 10pm and they had been out and started swearing and things.... I think part of the reason I'm finding it hard to address the problem is because they are at least 30years older than me and once they came down and shouted at me when I had a emergancy builder in at 6pm on saturday, they then told me that I'm not allowed to make noise on friday, saturday, and sunday evenings. Normally people expect noise those days. Later they will also be listening to songs of praise at full volumn, you can hear it outside the building, and now I don't mind peoples choises in tv and things but every sunday it happens so I end up having to go out.
Anyway still tired and read most of the night, which gain was difficult. I'll look into the ear problems but I have very sensative ear tissue so probably will have to ask my doctor before hand. Sorry if that sounds odd, it's a little hard to explain. Also are they comfortable? I jknow things like earrings annoy me when I sleep as I sleep on my side.
imma start off by saying every person/people with have had as neighbours who were council/housing association have been bloody awful. they suck big time, im not saying all do, but the ones we have had to put up with have been. our first flat we brought. in a nice block, sea view 6th floor. opposite were council tenants who smoked so much that it would come into our flat. next to them was a drug addict and dealer whos "friends" would buzz us at all hours of the night wanting to be let it. above us was some deaf guy, which is cool but he would watch tv late at night, early morning with the volume up on full. so we moved after 3 years to another pretty expensive flat, this time we find out the next door neighbour is council and they fight all day and night, shouting/screaming and the wife bugs my OH to help with her disabled husband at all hours of the day n night.
and above us is temp housing for addicts and homeless. so lots of loud tvs, loud talking (in that way chavs only seem capable of doing where they airnt able to talk at a normal level and have to shout everything) well, about 15 tenants later and 3 years on we get these skanky looking couple. proper crack heads. cue loud tv, loud talking, banging and ofc extremely loud sex. i took to going up there and banging on their door more times than i remembered. and they never answered because they were cowards (im autistic and still had the guts to confront them, so tells you allot about them) so one night i was like, f*&k this and removed the main fuse from their fuse box. i left a note on their door saying if they wanted it back to come ask and too kindly stfu. they never did. i put it back that night. and the noise continued. so again i was like f*&k this. this time. i donned my rubber gloves and wire cutters and went outside and found their mains box and cut their power off. i also messed with their sky dish so once they got power back they still didnt have tv and i did it in such a way that only replacing the dish would sort the issue. And now our next door neighbour is council and all her and her chavy bf do is stomp about and run n down the stairs (which are cast iron) and constantly wake my son up. We feel cheated. It seems, you buy your own house to be rid of crappy people and never seem to be able to get away from them.
My advice to you is just go up and ask them if they could keep their phone off the floor at night because the sound resonates through the floor.
Annoying neighbours are common, we have the above us in my home, and the guy gets drunk and makes noise and break things. It is better now though, as after not being able to persue him normally we sent police there one night, based on the legal night quiet period from 10 pm to 6 am, where there should be little disturbance unless there is like emergency (fire) etc. And he is much better. I think they also got him out for the night and he may be getting some treatment for alcoholism as well.
mrbump: I think that if they know what you did, you would have to pay the expenses of repairing plus some money for compensation and you may face criminal conviction for damaging property not belonging to you. Not sure about UK law, but in this country for sure. And in that case you could possibly end up in prison for a period of time. I think I would take it to the owner of the property or someone responsible for maintaining. Or just move out if nothing helps. I know if you bought the property it is much harder, as you will need buyer, but I would complain to authorities.
I am lucky in my London room. There is occassional noise of bed moving from the next room (about 2- times a week) but thats it! No other noise I can hear and I can easily forget this.

heh, they were crack heads. what they gonna do, call the police.
I'm lucky, my neighbours love me, because this is council housing, and the past three rounds have all been crazy junkie scum: I'm relatively quiet, tidied up the gardens and keep them neat, don't have scummy folk hanging around, and am nice and polite when I see them. i still remember when the wee one was teething and screaming all night, going to apologise to them for the noise, and them laughing about how they'd take a few weeks of screaming baby over years of blaring dance music, big dogs locked up, screaming fights, rowdy drug parties, and scumbags theiving anything in sight.
I honestly cannot understand how so many folk can live like that: council housing is an amazing privilage, and sorely needed by people like me, so it does grate on me that folk like that make everyone assume council housed = scumbag (sure, 99% it seems to be, but sucks for us 1%-ers), and take homes that could be treated well by people who need them and would appreciate them. I have a friend who has two kids - 16 and 12 - and all three of them are in a one-bedroom flat, because she had to leave her abusive husband with no money, and there's no 2/3-beds left cause they're mostly filled with junkies who trash the place! Sickening.

Technically speaking, maybe you could try it... If there is a law there is a night peace from... to... But I dont know UK law that well and I dont make noise in general.
There is a kind of anti-noise law, so you can call the police on them, but all they'll do is come chap the door and ask them to keep it down, and as long as they say "ok" and be quieter until the police drive off again, there's nothing else they'll do. And then the junkies might get a bit aggro with him, as it'll be clear who's done it, given the note and so forth, and junkie scum tend to be cowards in general, but turn when someone's getting the cops on their back, as they risk a hell of a lot more than a noise pollution fine if they have police at their door, and are more likely to stab someone than quit smack.

heh, your really sweet. you have this almost childlike innocence about you ive noticed from reading your posts. its refreshing and makes me smile lol.
ya see, mosts times doing the right thing doesnt solve anything. police will ask them to kept it down. council will ask you to keep a noise diary. after 6 months if its still going on, they will send round someone to mesure the sound lvls, these people dont work at night so when they come during the day they thinking its all sorted dispite you pleading with them and they close the case. if you complain again you have to do all that all over again.
yes, we did the right thing and it was a waste of time. so now, im more inclinded to screw people over than do the right thing
I dont have childish innoccence. I just dont believe violence would solve violence. And if I have legal means how to try to deal with it, why risk fine and few months to year, year and half in nice prison? Because I would call the police on the spot if you destroyed something of mine and I would make sure I have a proof against you, like keeping the note you removed something etc. And you are lucky they did not do it.
Btw. I can be very very nasty! And I do mean nasty. And selfish.
Lol we live in a non attached house but my next door neighbour is and the new tennants next to him were playing music so loud I could hear in my room. The worse thing was it was crappy music during day and night.
In the end my neighbour who works night shift and has a young family kept going over and over and adventually after about two months of wild parties whats this a drug raid found a ton of weed growing in there house no more parties after that.
And thats how we all got sleep but personnally I would use violence if you had no other option and had exhausted every legal option.
who said anything about violence, be smart and sort the problem out yourself as going down the legal route will never work, at least in the uk. it will either get you nowhere or get you in trouble.
if talking to them doesnt work then in the mean time get yourself some decent earplugs. ones that block out all noise. i req these: http://www.polimil.co.uk/acatalog/Surefire_EarPro_EP4_Sonic_Ear_Defenders__12.95.html#aSR4
