I know the nova says app compatible but is this the same benefits as the more expensive sync version or is the app just for short distance remote control with the nova? also the sync version does your phone have to be next to the vibe for first syncing?

Any We Vibe product which is app compatiable has all the same benefits. Can be controlled around the world, customize patterns etc.
For a first sync I believe it does need to be near a phone as the way the long distance works is through authorisation
