Weird reactions to lubes

I'm trying to find out what it is in 2 lubes that causes my weird reaction to them...just wondering whether anyone knows what causes these effects, or has experienced the same:

'Warming' Lubes: it keeps heating up, and actually seems to burn my skin. Externally I look like I have sunburn, and as for on the inside...I dread to think! I suspect I'm allergic to it...one of those heat up muscle sprays did the same thing to my back.

'Tingle' Lubes: they make me itch like you wouldn't believe!

This happened to any of you sexy people, or am I just odd?

We never found the "warming" lubes did anything at all for either of us but, as I mentioned on the other thread, Maximus has an effect on me! I do recall having a reaction to one other lube years ago but I don't remember which one.

If it leaves a visible mark like that I would certainly give it a miss.

Hiya Lady Luna. Looking at the ingredients listed in the product description they are all anti fungal and flow additives, preservatives. I think (and I may be wrong). It looks like the tingle factor may be in the "flavour" which is not actually given. I would email LoveHoney and ask what it is. But you defo sound like you have sensitive skin so just do not use any tingle or sensation type lubes. We're all different aren't we? My OH and I have tried every single heat sensation lube out there and none of them work very well but. . .

The tingle lube is great! As proven by all the reviews.

We must be thick skinned!

Tingle lubes burn like buggery for me and my lover. We were so excited and then cut to us lying in pain. How it achieves numbness and burning at the same time is very impressive.

It sounds like the lubes you have tried so far contain chemicals

Have you tried an organic lube? Sliquid Organics do a great range and LH stocks many natural lubes.

O My cherry lube is very natural and sugar free

If it's a sensitive skin issue go for a silicone lube. ID is very popular and silcone lubes don't dry out.

That sunburn side effect sounds nasty and you may want to talk to your GP to find out if this a specific allergy that applies to a variety of products out there.

Lady Luna, I'm really interested in what's in your muscle spray. May you say which one caused the allergic reactoin?

The reason I ask is I think I have a sneaking suspicion to the exact ingredient you are reacting to.

You're not odd at all. You are probably reacting to the active ingredient found in muscle sprays and most warming/tingle lubes: Propylene glycol.

It is commonly found in water based lubes. It is also found in brake oil. Propylene glycol makes your skin retain moisture. This is why you're advised not to use it if you have eczema or a yeast infection.

It's found in many things but you might want to look out for it in

  • makeup (mascara included)
  • shampoo and conditioner
  • cleansing cream
  • mascara
  • soap
  • skin cream
  • bubble bath
  • baby powder
  • Skin toners, cleansers etc
  • after shave.
  • baby wipe

Some websites condemn the chemical as a carcinogen but the FDA says it's safe when used properly. That said they banned its use in cat food. It's personal choice. In my case, I want to be able to pronounce anything that's going near my sensitive bits.

If you've still got your heart set on a sensations lube why not give an organic warming lube a try. For example a Sliquid organics one:

Not odd! I tried the Durex tingle lube, it was HORRIBLE! It was alright for maybe 10 seconds, then it felt like my insides were on fire, it really was bad, and once its inside you you cant get it out. Interestingly, my boyfriend also tried it at the same time and used the same amount of lube as me, and said he felt nothing!

I quite like the Durex tingle lube, my ex tried it and he said he felt like he was on fire! He really didn't like it at all and refused to ever try it again. Guess we all react differently. Hopefully you will be able to find one that suits you. x

Tingle lube and warming lube are horrible for me too - so painful! I was tried on some anaesthetic cream for my pain during sex and that made me sting like mad too! I guess some of us are just sensitive. Go to your doctors if you're worried though :)

Just to clarify if anyone is alarmed by the cat fact. PG is considered to be GRAS 'generally recognised as safe' because it has low oral toxicity. Therefore it won't severely harm someone if ingested but it may mess your eyes and cause burning sensations to the skin.

If you want your regular lube to be PG free there are some brands that don't contain it.

Sliquid H20: this is a nice alternative to the Organics range if you're on a budget. It's still natural and vegan.

Yes Organic: does water and oil based organic lubes.

Silcone lubes cause less irritation to sensitive skin. The most popular ones aren't organic but there are a quite a few not contaning propylene glycol like the two below.

Pjur Bodyglide Woman and ID lubes

Hope that helps. Check in with your GP and when you find out what works for you please let us know what it is.

i have used the tingle lube by durex and i aslo experienced a burning sensation and stopped using it.

Wow. Thanks, Tigerlilies! I can't remember the name of the muscle spray, though, I'm afraid. My OH's stepdad gave me some a couple of years back to put on a pulled muscle in my shoulder.

Thanks for all the tips for the alternative ones to try...I'll have to to give it a look. Although I'm currently smitten with the Durex Cherry one...I LOVE the smell...and the taste!

It's scary to see how many other people've had similar side effects with those lubes to the ones I get...sounds like it's more common than I thought it would be.

The only one I *really* didn't get on with was the Durex Aloe Vera lube, seemed to irritate me sadly, which was annoying...

Durex tingle makes me incredible itchy and stings me like hell.

Heat gives me the same burning effect, so yeah I'm totally with you.

XD

I really do wonder whether it's the same ingredient; most people seem to have a problem with both.

Used the durex heat lube this morning and it was spot on here. Everybody's different! SG69 x
