Wisdom Teeth

How long does it normally take for a wisdom tooth to come through? I started getting my lower left one back around July/August and it's only half way out yet. It's not a constant pain, like it's aching a little today but before that it hasn't bothered me for a couple of months. There's still no sign of the other wisdom teeth yet though, do they come through one at a time or is it supposed to happen simultaneously?

The thing is this is very individual. if you are unsure, see your dentist.

For me, they do not come simultaneously, but one at time. I have one removed about 5 years ago, because it was really causing havoc. The second was moth ago, because I was suffering from pain in my front teeth for a year and the reason was that the wisdom tooth was laying flat and putting pressure on them when growing - was not growing up but to the front. This can happen with lower wisdom teeth. But as you can see, my lower wisdom teeth were about 4 years apart on growth.

But in the meantime I also had one upper tooth grown, I think it started about hmmm 6 month after the 1st lower was removed. It went to the cheek side and will have to be removed eventually. But this one was fast. I did not have any problems since the growing. But it was not instant, but think few months. Not permanent pain, but occasional.

Now I am having problems with the lower wisdom tooth, this is bit nightmare. It sometimes comes up very painful, but because it is small and cannot grow, it just causes me pain without ever stopping. Go into no pain period for months, or even a year and comes back like this week. I really have to get this one removed. But yes, they can come simultaneously, happened to a friend, who had problems with 2 at the same time, but this does not have to be the case. It can also happen that only one or 2 will show up, the rest never. or you can have all 4 growing. or even non, there peoople who do not have them at all.

If in doubts, I would suggest doctor. They can make x ray picture of your month and decide whats the best procedure. or just check if everything is ok. Also if the pain gets too much, see doctor immediately. In some cases you can get infection, if the tooth makes certain wound.

Ali, you are one of the lucky ones i see...

as laveila sai everyones are different.

mine started coming through when i was 16. it was a slow and unclmfortable proces but luckilly there was enough room in my mouth for them. four years later i finally had a full set of them. some of them came in together but for me it was a gradual process. (wisdom teeth never stop growing as they are designed for eating raw meat and grinding against each other.) i found the discomfort stopped once the skin was completely broken as there is then nothing to get hurt.

if you have had braces/orhadontic treatment before now, then they should have made room for them, but regardless, they are annoying sods. however i would reccomend getting them checked when you are next in the dentist incase there are any problems with them as it isnot uncommon for them to grow the wrong way.

my best advice (and a bit of product endorsement herre, sorry) is use Bonjella.

hope they dont cause too much trouble

Hx

mine have been at it for i think, over a year so far and i am 22.

three out of four of them are what the dentist called 'partially erupted'.

they are going very slowly though and don't think they will come out completely because an xray showed they were impacted.

if you are concerned, talk to your dentist on your next visit but i think it can be a bit of a long slog for some people...

I should have said my upper. I blame it on early morning

Btw. the reason why there are so many problems with the wisdom teeth is pretty simple. They were developed at times when we had needed them, but since we are eating softer food now, our jaws are getting smaller, yet we still have wisdom teeth, which are now becoming useless and causing problems. At least thats what it seem to be

So there are people nowadays who just dont have them, at all. Guess thats what will happen in the future.

Sometimes they never fully come through, there can be things getting in the way that leave it stuck partly erupted. When that happens you're at risk of what's called pericoronitis, which is inflammation of the soft tissues around the crown of the tooth. A lot of the time that's just mild ache but it can become really painful. If it becomes really bad or it's happening frequently then see your dentist, they shoud take the tooth out for you, or at the very least give it a good wash out to help the inflammation settle down. And the spread for the others coming through could be a very wide time period, if they ever come at all. They may be stuck where they are under the gum, or maybe just not started moving yet. Anything up to the age of about 25 is normal for them to start coming through.

i'm so lucky that i don't have them!

if it hurts you could use something like bonjela?
