Changing username from autogenerated ‘user123’ style?

How do I go about changing my user name from the auto generated user2071 to J5 the name I am using for the reviews that are being posted? I tried through my profile with no success.

Quite a few people were stung by the ‘user123’ naming awkwardness. It’ll be nice to have some proper usernames for those who want them.
